They're not Brembos, they're Advics.

Are all RLs equipped with Advics for this generation of RLs? Can Advic brake pads be replaced with other manufactures pads? Recommendations? Merry Christmas

Sure. You dont have to match Advic. In fact I just replaced it with Carquest Wearever Platinum brakes from Advance auto. I didn't really feel much difference between this and previous brake.

At the Acura dealer this morning picking up my 07 RL Tech - they insist the brakes are Brembos and not Advics. Explains why the price for a set of front pads...aka: Brembos.........$389.00. Other than this web site where do I find the correct information on the brakes?

Ive replaced them they are clearly stamped advics. If they insist have them show you the caliper where its stamped Brembo and BTW I have the exact year as your RL and a tech.

+3 on finding new dealer.

Gotta hand it to Brembo for becoming the Kleenex of brake calipers!

Thanks for the input to all who responded. When I picked up the car this morning I let the service writer know they are not Brembos. He brought over the service manager who assured me they are Brembo brake pads. 08KBP_VA with your reply: were the pads you replaced the originals?
Besides the invoice pages for work done this dealer provides in this case 6 additional pages - AUTOMOBILE STATUS REPORT - on page 4 ADDITIONAL SERVICE RECOMMENDATIONS: "Brake job - Front (Replace Pads and Resurface Rotors): CHECKED VISUALLY. CLOSE (BREMBO)"
help here: CHECKED VISUALLY, CLOSE (BREMBO) - what the hell does that mean? Thanks Buster Hyman (nickname from high school)

^because we know the brand Brembo does not make pads for the RL.
people misuse and mispeak and will use The Brembo Brand as a crutch to cover all Big Brake kit calipers.
Just like how the Kleenex brand is generalized for all tissue....

all they did was mistype and was sure of themseleves that the brand was indeed Brembo, when we know otherwise...we know the RL calipers are made by Advics

I just replaced my RL pad recently and the pad clearly said Advics stamp on top left corner. I own both RL and TL-S (which came with Brembo) I know the differences between them, whoever tell you its brembo they can't even read a brochure.

I'm retired - love the Acura - DE PAXED - drive 10,000 miles year and have OEM spare tire in trunk - for the past 40 plus years never had a car more than 3 years - I haven't purchased brakes in those years.....how high is $400.00 for BREMBO? pads vs. a set of ADVICS? Car was in for timing belt pkg with water pump etc. 70,000 miles. I over service this car, intend to keep it to the end! Enjoy your youth - I did. Will post tomorrow after I talk to dealership.

So let me be clear as I may have misunderstood what dealer said, the calipers are Advics I dont have any clue what the pads were that I replaced. You do not need to put the same pads as the caliper at all as I did not. I went with the Powerstops vs Advics pads.

Advic fronts at rockauto are $72 and rears $42. Brembo pads are not available on rockauto nor required. I was also mistaken I went with Powerstops not Akebono and that set me back a whopping $82 for both front and rear. To be honest for a dealer $400 per axle is cheap if have seen it wayyy higher for some of the euro brands.

If brakes were Brembo's I am sure Acura would say that loud and clear... good selling piece ... since it does not, they went with Advics, that probably to some extent match Brembo's in some way (I might be wrong), but it is what it is.
I went with RockAuto brake kit and got slotted and drilled rotors with all pads - I believe it is Z23 or something like that... Great stopping power, very minimal noise (squeal develops if car is not washed regularly), almost no dust.. so far satisfied...

Next choice will be Akebono as most will suggest... just to try something different

As far as OEM Acura RL brake pads go, there are eBay listings selling full set front and rear for about 170$ I think... only front pads are $120 I think...

I use Autozone Duralast max pads for whooping $65.00 and they bite way better than Advics set that got replaced and best of all from now on I don't have to worry about keep buying pads. I paid $65.00 and 20 mins of my time. The dealer can suck on their $389.00, BTW my dealer never told me I need pad they generally said my pads gets low so keep an eyes out for.

here is my RL getting new pad around Thanksgiving

On the internet: New OEM Genuine Honda 2005 - 2012 RL Front Brake Pads - THESE ARE THE PADS ACURA USES WITH "BREMBO" FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS - BREMBO there it is again like Kleenex although they say Acura - does Brembo make the calipers for the RL?

Compare the above image to this Brembo caliper; you can clearly see the calipers on the RL are NOT Brembo:

I just checked several Acura and non-Acura sites and none of them say the 45022-SJA-050 pads are either made by Brembo or are for Brembo calipers. Can you provide a link which says otherwise?

FWIW, the Acura part number for the pads which fit the Brembo calipers on my TL is 45022-SEP-060.

Let me clear thing up for you again

04-08 TL Type S and TL MT come with Brembo caliper the pad is sub-contract to Federro (or something similar to that) as OEM part.

05-12 Acura RL came with Advics caliper and pads as OEM.

however there are ton of "crap" Brembo pads out there making pads for various make and model, these pads generally are garbage compare to OEM equip pads. If you keep insisted then let the dealer charge the $389.00 so later found that its the Advics pad being put in. If you compare that to Duralast Max, I would go with aftermarket brand name all day.

Thanks to Thoiboi Moderator for referencing posts by 007 Spy from over a year ago regarding THE BREMBO BRAKE bullshit. I got it - truonghthe you didn't clear it up the first time. Better this time - thank you all for your responses. Will get back after I make the dealer an offer he won't want to refuse.

Called the service writer at the Acura dealer yesterday and made this offer: I will schedule the work to replace my front brakes with BREMBO pads and resurface rotors for $389.00. I will be present when you pull the existing brake pads, if their clearly stamped BREMBO I pay, if not Brembos they pay. I record every conversation on my phone and notified the service writer he is being recorded and reminded him I have in writing from the dealership that the pads are Brembos......will advise after Christmas. Merry Christmas to all. Buster Hyman

CONCLUSION TO "BREMBO BRAKES" FOR 2nd Gen RLs - Let me preface in this post that I have have had my RL serviced at the Acura dealer I am discussing for 5 years and I over service the vehicle. I am a valued customer:
Their service manager called me early this morning: And read me from an Acura publication - THE CALIPERS AND BRAKE PADS FOR 2ND GEN RLs are ADVICS. However they are manufactured to BREMBO SPECS. My response was: that is not what I was told and he agreed. Their offer since I was inadvertently misled and they sure as hell don't want to lose me as a customer: they will install new Advics brake pads with no charge if I supply the Advics brake pads. I was satisfied with the offer - and accepted. Thanks to all your responses - NO BREMBOS on RLs- Happy New Year Buster

Awesome Resolution. I had thought they were actually Brembos the whole time! Is the pad design different between the TL-S/ TL mt and the RL Advics? Or is there a performance difference? I bought some EBC pads and Rotors, waiting until winter is over to put them in. Too cold to work on my car right now (-25 and add windchill to that geez). I also want to rebuild the rotors and paint or powder coat the calipers before changing the pads and rotors. Can they separate to properly clean? What's the best place to get the rebuild kit?
