2006 RL Starts without Keyless Remote
I just bought the vehicle this week and it only came with one Keyless Remote (Driver 1). I just noticed today that the car will start with the keyless remote (KR) in the house and not in the car. I read the older thread about the guy in Boston with the KR lost somewhere in the car but I'm not sure I have the same situation.
I can lock the car and it stays locked when I don't have the KR on me, and when I touch the door handle it stays locked, which is good. When I unlock the car, go back into the house and leave the KR inside and go back outside the car will start and it says Welcome Driver 1. This is why I think the Driver 2 KR is NOT lost somewhere in the car. Everything else seems to work just fine. Anyone have any suggestions? And in case you are wondering, I live in Spain and the car is bright orange.

Sweet decoy attempt.
The other key/chip is in the car. The only way the car will say "Welcome Driver 2" is if you unlock the car with the number 2 fob. Sometimes an aftermarket remote start installer will place the other key in the steering column so the car always has access. Otherwise, it is just lost under the seats or something.

Thanks. Being a noob please bear with me on this question.
The knob on the steering column used to start the car, I'm asuming there is a key under that plastic, correct? If so, should it be the key that is "bulit in" to the keyless remote from either driver 1 or driver 2? if not then technically you should have a total of three keys...one built in to both driver 1 and driver 2 remotes and one in the column... is this correct?
I have to be honest, the keyless remote is only thing I don't like about the design of this car. Everything else is spot on.

thats not bright orange.
The reason your car says driver 1, when the FOB is in the house is because you unlocked the car with that FOB.
The reason it starts with out a key FOB in the car is because there is one already hidden in there.
It could be under the seat, in the dash, or in the steering column which is the commonly chosen place
Moral of the story is that you will have to start hunting for it. The only place it will not be is in the trunk.

There is NO key under the plastic knob on the steering column used to turn the ignition cylinder. There IS a hole under the knob for you to put in your physical key, but if the knob is attached then no key will be there.
Technically, you have a total of 4 keys if you got both fobs: 2 electronic fobs, and 2 physical keys integrated into each fob. You push the black button on the fob to release the physical key. Aside from the fact that the physical key is held inside the fob for storage, the keys and fobs are completely separate systems. One DOES NOT depend on the other to work.
In other words, either fob will allow you to open and start the car without the key in it. Similarly, each physical key will allow you to open the door and start the car without the fob.
As others have pointed out, the reason you can start the car with your fob1 in the house is because there is another fob hidden in the car somewhere. The fact that it says driver1 is because you unlocked it with your fob1. Bottom line is... you have to find the other FOB that is in your car to resolve your issue. Hope this helps...

I'm in the market for a 2006 or 2007 RL (I Live in New England if you have one) and will be doing 95+% highway miles. What is everyone else getting for average milage on their RL? I know it's rated for 26 but as they say "your milage may vary".
P.S. this will be replacing my 2000 TL with 266k miles. What a great car this was.

Thanks to everyone so far for the suggestions and humor. One more stupid noob question...two replys mentioned "in the steering column" exactly where in the steering column should I be looking? Same goes for the "dashboard" suggestion.
Thanks again.

P.S. Next time you post, we'll have the forum track your IP address and pinpoint your location in New England. Then we can drive your car away and find and remove the fob for you. Then your problem will be solved and we can have anytime access with your fob! LOL

The fob could be anywhere in the cabin (even the crevices of the back seats!). Unlike the immobilizer chips in the physical keys which have to be in very close proximity to the steering column, the fob for the RL can be anywhere in the cabin area and the car will be able to get a signal from it. So search all over... not just the dashboard and steering column!

Key has been found!
We finally had a warm enough day and motivation on my part to go out and look for this key. I'm not going to tell you were it was located, I'll let you all take your best guess. Winner gets a lifetime supply of Turtle Wax.
Thanks for convincing me key #2 was lost in the vehicle as I was not sure about this. Finding this has resolved my following concerns:
1. Accidently leaving the car unlocked made it an easy target for anyone to drive away.
2. I don't have to purhase another expensive key and figure out how to program it
3. I don't have just one key and have to worry about losing it and being totaly screwed
4. I can't blame any strange behavior on possibly being key #2 lost in the cab causing the issue.
5. blah blah blah
Thanks again!
