2005 RL front brake disc and pads
Dec 31,2014
Happy New year!
On my 2005 RL, I replaced the factory OEM front disc at 108,000 miles with another OEM set from Acura...
The replacement set (Acura OEM) turns out to be crap and at 10,000 miles it needs turning again.
The Acura dealer who I bought them from said "normal wear and tear item...blah..blah...blah..". and I am after them for some kind of compensation for junky disc.
I need to replace the front disc and pads.. any recommendation of decent quality aftermarket stuff...( I am afraid of those since most of them are made in cheap sweat shop in China..)...but I now need to consider alternative as the replacement Acura OEM turns out to be crap.

Just have them resurfaced somewhere else if you don't feel like paying the dealer. If they had installed them and immediately there was a vibration, then maybe you could blame the parts, but honestly you can put any rotor u want on and cause it to warp by a single test drive, if driven a certain way. Why buy new rotors when you can have them resurfaced usually several times before they are even close to the toss-out tolerance?

^Considering you can pick up new rotors for just a little more than a shop will charge to resurface them, it's not a bad idea if the quality is questionable. If he has to turn them again in 10k miles, then his cost is more.
The idea that everything made in China is crap is a bad assumption. Good companies with high standards of quality can take their proven systems to China and save millions in labor costs and taxes. I have the Centric rotors on my Tundra. Clearly printed on the box, "Made in China."

Just buy from autozone or advance. Lifetime warranty on pads and some rotors so you'll never have to pay for brakes again. Even better if u can do all the work yourself. I have them and works well.

I don't understand how you can get a lifetime warranty on pads. Are you saying you buy one set and they will give you a free new set every time they wear out?

U buy a set and u give your info so they have it registered in the system. If your pads starts making noise or if u just want new pads to go along with new rotors, just go back and buy the same set first so u can install the pads. When u are done, return the old pads for warranty and they will credit your $ back. Only reason u have to buy a set is u have to give them your old pads first. So unless u want to have your car on jack stands after u taken the old pads out, then waste time to go to store to swap it for new pads, I rather have it all there then return it for my $ back after.
And yes, oo7spy, lifetime warranty on pads means exactly that. Look it up if u don't believe me.

It's not that I don't believe you, it's that it seems too good to be true. Seems like a lifetime warranty on a bottle of dish soap. You have to use it, and it has to run out sometime. Seems too good to be true, but I won't argue the legitimacy.

Yes agreed. However, places like Monroe Muffler offer the same warranty. And they get their parts from guess where lol??
If people are wondering about quality, it's just as good as oem. No noise and not a lot of brake dust. I always like to go oem but nothing beats lifetime warranty.

As far as the rotors are concerned, get them from Advance Auto Parts online and pickup in the store. They are usually ready in 30 minutes. The rotors are $100 each, but do 2 transactions and use coupon code TRT41 for $40 off each transaction. 2 year warranty on the rotors and you can swap them out. What I usually do is when the 2-year warranty end period is coming up, swap!

Am I understanding correctly that there is a bit of dishonesty in this method? You are saying that we need to claim something that is working properly isn't, right?
#12
Are you referring to the pads or rotors? If it is the rotors you are referring to, I usually change my pads and rotors once a year considering how many miles I drive (30,000)per year. Usually by that time of the two year warranty or before, I feel they need a refresh simply because of steering wheel vibrations when braking exiting off ramps.

I wasn't really referring to a specific part. I was referring to making a warranty claim under the premise of malfunctioning hardware when, in reality, the parts have only experienced normal wear and tear. Is that a correct assumption for the majority of the time?

With other parts like an alternator, they do have to test it before giving you a replacement. They still make money in the end as they will just refurbish your alternator and sell it again.

They wouldn't offer lifetime warranty for a wear and tear item without knowing that there could also be consequences with some warranty claims. Not saying anybody is abusing the warranty, just don't think it's that big an issue if they're not making it an issue either.
#17
@oo7spy the reason the stores offer lifetime warranty is because probably 90% of their customers never take advantage of the warranty. They either misplace receipts, change cars, etc.
Unfortunately, I am the other 10%.

Warranties are a marketing tool, without a doubt.
The other day I was buying bathtub caulk at the hardware store. One was about $5 and had a 50-year warranty. The other was $8 and had a lifetime warranty. I bought the pricier stuff. Later on, I thought too late, "Who's going to keep the receipt for their bathtub caulk for 51 years?" Hell, by then you're either 3 houses later or you're dead. Of course, the manufacturer perfectly well knows that. But I didn't stop to think, so they have my $3. Well played.

maybe it is the caliper or hose?
As noted before, my new front rotors were warped after only 12,000 miles.
I took my RL to a brake shop and they said the caliber could be sticking or the brake hose may have restriction in it. and that cause may cause the brake pads to stick and thus the constant heat generated warp the disc...
Does that make sense to anyone?
The RL has 120,000 miles on it..is it time to rebuild the calipers?

This is where I ordered everything from 2 years ago when I did all four corners. Zeckhausen Racing My normal garage doesn't install anything he doesn't sell so zeckhausen found me a recommended garage in my area. Did everything with labor for less than what Acura wanted for only doing the fronts.

So the dealer is telling me that I am at 1mm in the front and I should use their OEM Brembo solution and turn the rotors for $540 + $100 to flush the dirty fluid out - I feeling the sticker stock on that.
I am debating going to an independent and maybe stop tech or another pad - and perhaps not turning as the dealer said ;'they are fine;
any thoughts?

I have always complained about Honda brakes, but maybe it's just me driving them too hard. Now that I live out of Denver and have a 3K foot drop in 4 miles, combined with driving too fast, means warped rotors on a daily basis.... If only Carbon ceramic rotors were available for the RL!!!!

I suddenly don't feel sympathy about your brake "problem" any more.
