'06 RL with Tech Package Grille Emblem UV Damage

Hey all!
Newbie here has some UV or road debris surface damage to my grille emblem shield. I cannot for the life of me find a rubbing compound to get rid of the whitened plastic. It almost looks like clear coat failure. Without purchasing a replacment for around $400, I seem to be out of options.

Any thoughts?

emblem shield? Do you have that infrared deal?

Maybe you can wet sand it like a head light and have it clear coated.

It is the radar-based CMBS / ACC radar component shield. Pretty neat system. Thanks again for the advice, Heavy_RL. I may just try that!

I find it ironic your user name and problem seem to be one and the same... Just a pointless observation.

that "shield" is just a piece of plastic over a real sensor so don't be afraid of damaging a 4k system

nope, it's one piece and it's this part no 18: 75710-SJA-A01ZA and it's 300 dollars for the new sensor and will require special equipment to replace if I remember correctly.

Can you take a picture of the UV damage?

Good info csmeance, I was with 037 and thought there was a shield.

That being said, if its flaking that leads me to believe their is a coating... I wonder if it will work properly with the clear 3m protective film over it.

I'm gonna take another stab at it and show you the sensor in my car so we can figure out what's plastic and what's sensor.

037, the plastic on your grill is the ACC (part 6, $290.63):

The box in front of the radiator is the "Radar" CMBS (part 6).

There are two part numbers here for part 6 and both are labeled "sub-assembly". Part 1 = $2379.04. Part 2 = $2319.20. These prices are the DelRay Acura discount prices too. the dealer will go over $3k for both parts.

Ouch on that price, I'm surprised they don't list another "cover" on that part blow out.

Hey fellas,
Sorry...away from the computer for awhile. Yes, my callsign is the root of my problems here. It is indeed just a plastic (cosmetic) piece, so I am going to investigate rubbing compounds again and perhaps wet sanding...although I have never done that to plastic. I will try to snap a pic very soon. Thanks for all of the input, gents!

I agree with some of the other comments. Stop by your local auto parts house and see if one of those headlight restore kits does the job. (assuming it might, because you mentioned it was white). You can then step your way from polishing compound, to rubbing, to wet sand & clear coat if necessary. Any those are better than purchasing a $300 sheild.

Hi my 06 rl has same problem with shield. Its not on the outside though its in between the plastic, and I dont see any way the rubbing compound will work because its separating on the inside if it is like mine

anybody found the shield for less, its just a simple piece of plastic, I took mine out nothing special needed for tools, the expensive part is behind the shield, you dont need to deal with that.

Hey Foreste1,
Great point...after reading your first message, I realized that I have damage both on the front exterior surface (probably UV/ ablation-type damage from road debris) and internal damage (probably delamination) like you mentioned.

Here are some pix...sorry for the delay

Anybody figure anything out on this matter? I would think that even if you took a headlight restore kit to the surface it should at least make it look a little better.

Revisiting this thread. I took my bumper off today to replace the lower grill trim piece. While I was at it, I decided to remove the CMBS emblem and do a thorough restore on the lens. I'm quite happy with the surface restore results. It looks nearly brand new but still has the underneath issues that a few others have complained about. It looks like the clear lens portion is coming away from the background in some areas. Has anybody resolved this issue with their CMBS emblem? Obviously, the clear portion would need to be removed from the background, cleaned and reapplied with some sort of insanely clear adhesive. I'd much rather try to fix this rather than shell out $300 for a replacement emblem.
