A-004: The what fluids go where thread: Transmission, front and rear differentials
Ive been doing some research on transfer case fluid and ATF but there are a lot of threads on this (some outdated) but bits and pieces of information are discussed on several different threads
https://acurazine.com/forums/second-...al-etc-858353/
is where I have been looking
I want to use this thread to confirm the proper fluid and amount.
Transfer case fluid:
AMSOIL Synthetic 80W-90 Gear Lube
looking for 3.5 quarts? .77 in the transfer case 2.8 in the clutch??
doesn't have to be Honda Branded fluid as long as its SAE 80W 90 Hypoid GL4 or GL5
As for the ATF I see in my manual ATF Z1 at 85,000 miles am I doing the flush 3 times? How much quarts am I using per drain and fill?
I do all my own maintenance but gathering the specific information with so many different threads dated from 2008, 2012 etc confuse me.

I can't help you find the quantity info in those threads right now, but I can assure you the information for the car has not changed since 2005. The only difference is you can no longer get the original ATF/Diff fluid (DW1?) and now should use ATF Z1 and Dual Pump Fluid II/DPSF SH-AWD fluids instead.
IIRC, the tranny is 3.8 qts and the transfer case amount is in the manual. Search "3x3" for plenty of info on the triple drain and fill. It's not the only option.

You reversed it bond.
DW-1 is the replacement yo the now obsolete Z-1.
It's a little more than 3 quarts that come out at each drain for the transmission . Buy 11-12 quarts to be safe

The transmission fluid I'd do every 15 thousand miles starting next week or so with the first 4 quarts being Acura DW1 ATF
The transfer case I'm buying 4 quarts of these and using about 3.5 quarts for the transfer case
Am I on the right track?

Just be aware the rear dif has two chambers. I can't remember if I bought 4 or 5 quarts when I did that last. The front diff takes 80W90 fluid and one standard bottle is more than enough.
Just make sure your car is level when doing differential fluids.

Wait. Let's be clear.
Transmission: ATF DW1 (thanks thoi)
Transfer case: 80W-90 hypoid gear oil
Rear diff: DPSF SH-AWD fluid

And the rear dif im not changing? I don't need to change the rear diff when I change the transfer case?
4 quarts each but the transfer case uses a little less

Rear diff has similar intervals to the tranny. You can change any one of the three on their own though.

If you're only doing a drain and fill for the trans you'll need 3-4 quarts of dw-1.
Tranfers case you'll need 1qt of 80w-90, i used the amsoil synthetic
Rear diff 4 quarts of dpsf will be enough for both chambers.

You're welcome. I was all prepared to change the fluids in my trans, tc and rear diff. I had read every thread like you and had all the fluids and washers and a little fluid transfer pump and then i blew out my knee and couldn't crawl around under the car any more. Luckily I found a member on here who said he would do it for me for a small fee. His name is Paul and his username is acrdr. He's in North Jersey as well so if you run into any problems or need any work done that requires some expertise, I highly recommend him.

Front transfer case and more !
Hello !
First, You can say this guy is very new to Acura RL 2006 . Still have my CL 1997 but it's totally different from the RL. In this case I have been reading a lot about the fluid that you can't ignore it because you will have a serious problem. So yes I can understand what and where the differential and what type of fluid I can add (already ordered one). But what is the front transfer case ? Why we have it ? Where is located at ? And finally what kind of fluid? . If you could please add pictures since I'm new to Acura RL world and not strong enough to have the ability of a mechanic or experienced people. From this stage I would say thank you for reading my post !

I'm sorry that I didn't have the information you were looking for in your first thread on this topic, and I'm also sorry no one else was around to help you. However, creating multiple threads about the same topic is against the rules. Don't worry, you aren't in trouble (yet), but it is most helpful for you to bump the original thread about whatever topic you have a question on than starting a new one. With that in mind, I merged your two threads together.
I am not 100% certain, but the transfer case transfers the power from what is ordinarily a FWD transmission to the drive shaft for AWD capability. I did not get the chance to change the fluid before I lost my RL, or I would help you locate it. As the previous member said, the fluid is 80W-90 hypoid gear fluid.

The rear diff actually has a DIY on youtube, just watch out for the fact that it has two chambers:

Can you explain more please . Like what type of fluid any a specific manufacturer, and where is located at ? Is it next to transmission? Is it the same process that looks similar to the rear differential fluid ?
Thank you
Thank you

To be honest with you I have no clue how to delete the old post and sorry if I broke the community rules. I have seen the video you provide before one hour and a half ago. But there is no info about the transfer case in that video on YouTube. But I would say thanks to the people who can make it easier here and explain what, why and where !! Free information.
The hardest part is the pictures of the assembly and the location of the part (at least for me)
Most of us here DIY and we are trying to save money and time by clicking the knowledge and have some ideas about the car . Because you can't add gas and that's it ! (A lot of people who does that)

Fluid manufacturer doesn't matter. It's just oil for this part of the drive train. If it says SAE 80W-90 hypoid gear oil, it will work.
Hopefully someone one can chime in on its location.

This is really great information . Let me use the same thread and jump to the transmission fluid too , the good news it's easyer to located but how many qurts needs to fill and what type ?
Thank you again

Your car has been on the market for close to 12 years. The simple stuff has been documented again and again. Please find the "search this forum" toolbar in the main forum and use the search.
The trans needs 3.8 qt of ATF-DW1 for a single drain and fill.

Finally getting ready to do this
Pennzoil ultra platinum, DW1 & Amsoil 80w 90 on the way. Im going to avoid doing the rear diff since im gonna do everything DIY and im not sure if the rear diff is something I want to mess with since of its awd system
This car is a tank though, ive done multiple high speed runs in this RL and redline it often and its solid.. however it does need a jpipe but its not something I feel like dropping 500 on

Rear diff is pretty easy. A 3/8" drive ratchet, a drain pan, and a fluid pump are all you need.

Just did fluid change on my RL..
Started from trans fluid, need to partially remove under body plastic shield to access drain bolt (PITA), used 3qt DW1 fluid, filled thru dipstick tube.
Next transfer case. Used 1qt Mobile 1 gear oil 75w-90. drain/fill bolts are located close to transmission (close to front of the car). Used a fluid pump to pump in new fluid.
Last changed diff fluid with Honda DPSF-ii (Dual Pump Fluid II). Two chambers total about 3.5qt.The bolts (2 drain, 2 fill) were TIGHT to remove. Used a funnel with a long tube for filling.

Burning Brakes
Quick tip...ALWAYS undo the fill bolt first! Changing fluids on the RL is very simple, just make sure you have a good square 3/8 drive socket. A torque wrench can be helpful too. I will sometimes spray pb blast on the bolts a few hours before I do the job, makes it that much easier.

I can do all the DIY the biggest pain in the ass for me is squeezing under the RL makes it uncomfortable to do at work

You can change your light bulbs at work, but you can't change your oil there.
#35
I used front center jack point to raise the front end high enough then put in jack stands behind front wheels, space is quite tight; rear diff has more clearance, I raised rear end using tow hook. My floor jack is small, I had to cut a piece of 4x4 timber and sandwich it between jackpad and tow hook in order to raise the rear high enough for jack stands.

but when my jack is getting shitty and for the cost of a new one I could just pay someone to do this so idk yet

I don't think I paid more than $40 for either of my 2 two-ton floor jacks. One came from Advance Auto Parts.

The rear differential is really easy to do! Just changed all my fluids 2 weeks ago.
You'll need 4 Quarts of DPSF fluid from Acura ($10 each), a 3/8 rachet, a fluid pump.
the smaller rear one takes .75 quart, the main rear took 3.25 quarts..
watch this: this guy is awesome!!!
