$400 for front brake service??? seems way high??
My 06 CPO RL went in for the B1 service. I also had a couple other warranty items for them to check out. Service guy calls me later that day to recommend I replace a couple tires, replace brake fluid ($50 charge) and replace front diff fluid ($79). He also said my front pads are at 2mm and they recommend replacement, plus resurface of the front rotors. He quoted me $398 to do the front brakes.
almost $400 for a new front pads and the resurfacing job plus labor. That seemed pretty high, but I havne't done brakes on this car yet... I have done brakes on cars before, but honestly, I'd just assume pay them to do it...I don't have the time or interest in doing my own brakes..but at hte same time, I won't want to pay triple what is fair... I also don't want the morons at midas doing my brakes either...
I just thought I'd check with this forum to get an idea what is "fair" for a front brake job on the RL.
thanks.

The front pads for the RL are ridiculously expensive, that is why your quote is so high. It isn't the dealer, its the parts cost.
My dealer actually offers aftermarket equivalents and they say they have never had a complaint. They have no idea why the genuine Acura pads are so expensive but it's pretty ridiculous to say the least.
So it isn't your dealer...its Acura

ill never have the dealer touch my brake's, i got brand new front pads from a guy on here for 130 and that was shipped, the acura estore has them for $206, ill just go to my mechanic and have him put them on, i still have alittle while left before i need to replace.
but yes there are a bunch of aftermarket equivalents out there, just do some research.

well..I haven't done it yet, so I haven't "overpaid" yet. ![Smile](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
THANKS for all the info!
If the front pads are more pricey - at least that would explain why the quote seems high. I am sure they don't use non Acura parts at the dealer...
I wonder if I could run into issues if I used non-OEM pads on my car given I have a CPO warranty....I know brake pads wouldn't cause any failure, but who knows what kind of BS they might cliam if some part fo my brake system went bad and I had non acur pads. I know a guy who had changed brake fluid to high perf fliud then had problems with the brake computer sy stem...and the dealer claimed the fluid could have done it and screwed him on a $$ repair... not an Acura...but a true story of a dealer screwing someone...
how much can I likely save on the parts if I go the route of buying non Acura pads? is it a $50 savings or a $150 savings?
thanks again!!
I could force myself to do the pads myself.... depending on how much money that wouls ave me, and then just wait to see if I get vibration and if/when I do, just pay to resurface them then... I want to say the last time I had the dealer do that on my MDX it was like $120 or $150? they did it pretty quickly, they said they have a machien that can do it without taking the rotors off the car....
are ther online instructions to DIY for front pads on this car?

My pads are at 2mm per the techs.... I'm thinking I"ll just wait a bit and do them later...and give myself some time to consider doing it myself..maybe....and using aftermarket pads... i have to look into that more.. my only concern is using aftermarket pads that might end up not being as good as OEM? or woudl they be better???

you can find OEM pads on ebay in the $150's.
I went to TireRack and got the Satisfied GranSport 6 for about same price for the fronts and the stopping distance is much better now. No more "sliding" at triple digits, not that you should go there but it helps to have the extra power.
I ordered a 2nd set before they went back order. First set took like two months to get to me.

037 - did you put them in yourself of pay a mechanic to do it? i doubt my dealer would install non OEM pads... and I honestly don't think the job is that bad... it's probably a few hours at most and maybe a six pack... ![Smile](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
i'd just need some DIY instructions... I did my own pads on many cars.. my S60R had brembos at all four corners and I installed new pads and rotors on that car..... so I can do it...it's a matter of do I WANT to do it myself... time is scarce with three kids / work /etc.. sometimes it's better to just pay a pro to do it.. and save the time...

I've had them for 2 months so I can't comment on durability. I was sold on stopping power alone.
I have to admit that the first couple of miles they felt as good as stock warm and slightly worse when cold.
But later I realized I just wasn't pushing them as hard as they can be pushed (with the brake pedal).
once broken in these are bad @$$.

yes oem pads for the 4 pot RL calipers are exensive. I think I paid around 130 for the ebc red stuff.
If your rotors are not warped you do not have to turn the rotors. I would simply hit the sides with a good sanding to take off the glaze then install the new pads.
If you decide to do it yourself a local shop shouldnt charge you more than 40-50 bucks to machine both rotors and then you simply pop in the pads. Its litterally that simple.

You can get after market pads at the link below for about $100, Akebono proact ceramic. I haven't used these pads on my RL, but have used them on my Sequoia and like them, very quiet so far. On a scale of 1 to 10 with changing the oil being a 1, I'd say changing brake pads is a 3. But, if you've never done it before, you'd probably be better having someone else do it because you do need to know what your are doing. For example, you need to know how to pry the retaining clip out and you need to understand how to push the pistons in. Neither are hard, but you just need to know what you are doing. That said, pretty hard to do any damage. The pads pop right out and the new one's go right in. I can do a wheel in less than a half hour, including jacking up car and pulling tire.
As for after market pads affecting any warranty, I doubt it's true. How many people put aftermarket oil/oil filter on their cars and that does not affect warranty.
As for your rotors, feel around the outside edge to see if there is a lip forming. If it's just starting, you are good for a while. If there is a notable lip, change them. new rotors are about $150-$200.
You didn't say how many miles you have on your car??

I bought the RL CPO with 29k miles. it now has about 39k....
my CPO paperwork shows they resurfaced the OEM rotors and did NOT put new pads on the car. i didn't catch that until after I bought it... not sure if the CPO shoudl have included new front pads or not???
i have done pads myself on other cars in the past, so I know how to do it... maybe i"ll buy OEM pads and jus do it myself or the aftermarket ones from tire rack.
if when i get pulsing on my brake pedal i can pay the dealer to do the resurfacing...
it's one of those things where you have to assess the cost and the time it takes to do it. as front pads are pretty easy, maybe i'll do it myself an dave a couple hundred bucks...

Acura (Honda) brakes seems pretty easy to work on, so I'd suggest doing it yourself. Plus..... if the brake fluid hasn't been changed, it should be since you're overdue (every 3 years regardless of mileage).

i paid them $50 to flush my fluid when it was in this trip.... I've done pads, but don't have a bleeder...and didn't want to hassle with buying fluid, etc... so i've got the fluid flushed... all it needs are pads.
they want $400 for pads and a resurface. the price of the pads from them is $220. I didn't get a quote for the resurfacing, but I"ve had it done on my MDX and I want to say it was around $100.... so assuming $220 is the pad parts cost, and $100 or so is the labor to resurface.. then they are charging me roughly $60 in labor to replace pads...which honestly isn't that bad for a dealership...
overall, I'm VERY happy with my local acura dealership. they are a GREAT bunch of people. the sales people are low pressure and very nice. service people bend over backward to help... the ONLY gripe I had was when I complained that hte leather on my MDX seemed tgo be wearinv excessively and they wouldn't repalce it under warranty

$160 for pads (have to buy those)
$120-140 to resurface rotors (can't do this myself)
$280-300 total for stuff that I either have to buy or can't do on my own.
their charge = $390'ish.... so they are charging me about $100 in labor for the brake job. the real question si do I want to save about $100 to do it myself or do I want to pay that amount for the convenience of not having the hassle of doing it on my own...
these kinds of jobs were fun when I was single, but now that I am married, have three kids - my time is limited.... $100 to let the other guy do the dirty work sounds pretty good...

Akebono ProACT Ceramic Pads (Material: Ceramic) and Satisfied GranSport 6 Pads are not wallmart brand. In most case these way better then OEM brakes.
But you pay a premium price at Acura Dealer if you wish.

I bought the GranSport 6 and they are not $130 for front and rear. More like $160 front alone. Those are definitely not Wallmart brand ![Smile](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Akebono on the other hand I don't trust to be superior to OEM.
