"Tighten Gas Cap" Warning

Leaving Costco this afternoon, the "Tighten The Gas Cap" warning came up on the info display when I started the RDX. I pulled into another space, stopped the engine, jumped out and removed/replaced the cap, making sure to turn it several clicks. Restarted the engine, but the warning came back immediately.

Drove home and parked, restarted the engine and the warning came up again. Tightened the cap again, gave it a couple of hours, restarted--warning again. Hope it won't come up again after leaving it overnight. Seems like a minor issue to bother taking to a dealer, but if it keeps up I'll have to check it out.

Just reporting it to the forum "for the record."

I had the same thing happen. I filled up a few days ago, then out of the blue yesterday, the warning came on. I stopped and loosened and retightened. Then after a couple of starts and probably 20 or 30 kilometres, it went off. I think the delay in it turning off is normal as the system needs to run normal for a period of time before it considers the issue resolved, but I do find it odd that it turned on days after my last fill-up.

I had this happened several times. And usually this happens out of the blue several days after fill up (I always make sure I close the cap tightly). At first I was loosening and re-tightening the cap, and after several restarts and several miles driving, the warning would go away. But last couple of times I don't even bother re-tightening, the warning goes away on its own after driving several miles and restarts.

Maybe there is a problem with some sensor, will bring this up at the dealer on next oil change.

^^^ Votnet is correct. I had this happen a few times on my TSX and if you get the message, you can try and undo/tighten the cap but if the message doesn't go away, drive several km (or miles) and I think it will eventually go away. At least it did on my TSX every time.

Tighten Gas Cap

This also happened to me and it did take time for it to clear. It has not happened since, but I am watching it.

For those of you having this problem - Are you topping the tank off when you fill up? My Integra had a similar problem (although it is OBD II it did not have a tighten gas cap light. It activated the check engine light with a code relating to the carbon canister). I finally figured out that it only happened when I kept adding gas after the pump clicked off. It has not happened since I quit topping off the tank years ago. Have not had the problem with my RDX which I do not overfill.

I usually stop after pump clicks off. The strange thing is that the warning usually would come up somewhere in the middle of the tank, not right after fill up. Also I noticed that this only happens after the car is parked for a long time on a sunny hot day. Now that the temperatures went down this doesn't happen anymore.

Be careful with the clicking! Not on this vehicle but on a rental, I clicked too much and snapped the cap off!

Yes, this has happened to me as well. Re-closed it a couple of times and after a few starts/stops the code clears. Might be a bunch of bad gas caps. Number one cause of check engine lights coming on is loose gas caps.

I do not top off, I just go until the pump stops.

I forgot to give an update after my original post: the next day the light did not come on, nor has it at any time since.

This happened to me, got 3 times this warning and it comes not after I filled gas thank.
It went away after some miles. However I just wanted to let everyone know that I just received check engine light ( 3000 miles)and the oxygen sensor replaced by the dealer.

Wife just had it happen to her. She had filled it about a week ago and the tank was 3/4 full. She stopped, turned off the car, and tightened the cap. She said she always makes sure it clicks twice when refilling. Hopefully it goes off soon.

I don't think hit weather has anything to o with it since it was foggy and 37 today.

Yep just happen to me also. Just filled up and topped off with a few extra handle squeezes and got the Fuel Cap Not Tight msg as soon as I started up.

I will try NOT to add an extra fuel next time when the pump shuts off on it's own.

I dont know if this will actually make a difference, but I think you need 3 clicks. I didnt actually check the manual on the RDX, but I had read in a previous car where it specifically said 3 clicks to tighten cap.

I'd be suprised if it's actually that sensitive, but just wanted to share the info.

I think you are correct. After I made my post I went out to the car, took off the gas cap and tightened it back to no more than 3 clicks. And sure enough the "Tighten Gas Cap" message was off upon starting the car.

I have a tendancy to "click" the gas cap excessively after fueling up.

Here's a quote from the manual, page 264: "After filling, replace the fuel fill cap, tightening it until you hear it click at least once."

With my other cars I've usually tightened with two or three clicks.

It also helps if you apply a little pressure (pushing) while turning the cap. I have had this same message even when clicking the cap three times. I now push in and turn the cap at the same time, and I have never had the message return. Hope this helps??

Thanks for that update. One would imagine that if they had a car built during the last 30 days that perhaps this would be incorporated??

I didn't do anything and the error was gone the next morning. Has anyone had their RDX serviced for this issue?

the gas cap fairy got me today

I'm at about 4,000 miles and this happened to us today. Filled up Thursday--two days ago. Tried to retighten it, open it and reinsert/tighten it, turned the car off and on a few times, and drove about 30 miles today. We'll see if it turns off on it's own, but just wanted add my experience to the pile.

Just saw the 'tighten fuel cap' on my wife's RDX tonight. Don't know how long the message has been there. She's got 1370 miles, purchased Feb 23rd, built Jan 2013. We'll monitor it and bring it in one of these days if it persists.

Have had the same issue. The "Tighten gas cap light" has come on 5+ times for me. Car has 18,000+ miles on it, bought in April 2012 (right after it went on sale).
Never had a problem until about 10,000+miles. The first time it came on, I thought I just didn't tightening it enough. Now that it's come on so many times, I ensure I tighten it after every fillup. I always fill it up till the pump stops, but never put more in.

After light comes on, I take cap off, then re-screw it on. Message seems to go away each time about 2-4 times after engine has been restarted.

The one time I saw the gas cap message was the one time I filled up with the engine running. Not once when the car was off. Maybe thats the trick.

So far, had the warning go off twice. Once the day after filling up, so cap may not have been on tightly enough. Second time happened about 3 days after filling up, and I was certain to do 3 clicks. The car was off when I filled it up, and did not top it off. Have my first free dealer oil changed scheduled in the next 2 weeks so I will have dealer look into it.

I have around 4000 miles on my 2013 rdx. First had the problem first time I got gas and thousands of tightening a later still had problem. Tool to dealer last week and he said evac test failed and he replaced the valve. I drove car home and no light yesterday but the tighten fuel cap light came on this morning. I'm keeping this as a record. He wants me to bring it back today. I will do that. Just saying it is not the valve! And it is not the tightening . It is a defect!

this warning has come on about 3 times so far since I had the car. Currently have 12,000 miles

I always delete the notifications on the nav screen but I think I will leave them on there in case the dealer wants to see them. I will have the dealer check this out as well at the next service

I had warning message and discovered that my gas cap was loosening on its own. I installed a key lock gas cap from local car parts store and the messages has not returned.

Thanks for the PDF link. I'm glad to see that Acura is acknowledging that there may be an issue. Bought our's in Feb 2013 and have seen this warning pop up many times. When I took the car in for the first oil change earlier this year, as expected they acted like they've never seen the problem before. I'll be sure to bring a copy of the bulletin with me at the next service interval (real soon, actually).

This is an on-going Acura/Honda issue...

This has been an issue with Honda-built cars for years - it usually goes away in 30-50 miles or the next day. Must an issue in the ULEV software.

I had the same issue start today on my 2014 MDX. Half a tank and started the engine and out of the blue the light came on. Got out took it off and put it back on and tightened it to no avail. Starting to sound like a problem Acura needs to address. I had another issue with the charging system warning and that was addressed through a software update.

2013 RDX AWD with 34K. Had it for a year now. Never had this issue UNTIL today when wife called and said this warning came on after starting the car after work. I filled it up last night and always "click" three or four times. I always fill the car as I track the fuel costs, mileage, MPG, oil life religiously. So my theory is that I caused this by filling it up further than I normally do. She ran it down to a range of just 20 miles. I thought it would take a bit more gas as it seemed to shut off at the normal volume of gas, even though she ran it down lower than ever. So I squeezed the trigger a couple of times after auto-shut off. That was last night. Today, the warning for tighten gas cap comes on. Will mention to my mechanic (not the stealership - they only touch my Hondas/Acuras for warranty/recall work) at next service. My guess is that I caused this. I know better than to "top it off". Have never seen this warning on the 2010 TL either.

Just a data point. Had this pop up on my 2006 TL after 80K+ (8+ years) for the first time last winter; it was in colder weather if that had any bearing. It took about two weeks for it to finally clear itself. I always click the cap at least half a dozen times and try not to overfill; let the pump determine when to shut off.
