key fob is looking bad

greetings....

i dont know if this has come up before.
the key fob looks unsightly after a very short period of time.
either scratched up or the finish is peeling.

has anyone dealt with this before ? does acura covers it under warranty ,or if there is some sort of cover i can put over it ?

although its a minor issue acura really could have done better then this.

from one retiree to another...thank you

since damage is limited to perimeter, and not buttons,
il mask the inside and paint it but only as a last resort.

i called acura customer relations yesterday they stated i need to bring it to dealer for inspection and decision. im gonna give the dealer a call, i would expect an answer over the phone without having to go in for an appointment possibly wasting my time and theirs. i actually recently had it in for a minor issue and that would have been the time to deal with it, but it wasnt on my mind at the time.

but the other day im looking at it and thought this is unacceptable, and so im looking for a solution. i was hoping for a rubber or silicone cover that might slide over it sorta like a cell phone case. im gonna search on ebay. if that dont play out and dealer wont replace it, im only left with the spray option. because im not gonna go out of pocket to replace 2 fobs.

i know this vehicle has 4 year bumper to bumper but i dont know if this applies,
even though it is bumper to bumper when im actually in the vehicle.
but if i had this issue ,and i had it early on, i assumed others did as well.
i was hopeful someone had a solution, but only you replied. thanks again.

I think there was a long thread about this somewhere on here. I seem to remember reading that the dealer considered it normal wear and tear.

yes... thank you...you are correct...

i actually had read that post the other day, but it was dated before my 2013 model year, so i didnt think it would apply. i was looking for the more current second generation rdx owners, and their experiences. and despite acuras reply, normal wear and tear should not occur within the first year.
but i have found in the past one dealership might refuse a request and if you simply drive to another they will approve it. you can also appeal to your regional office to intervene.

there seems to be a lot of discretion at the dealership level. i once had acura replace a rdx driver seat cover, that had some fading, and driver floor mat, logo was peeling away from mat. both could have been denied for wear and tear yet they approved them without any resistance. another time i had a radio problem in my tl, that only occured with very cold weather. first dealer did nothing. next dealer replaced the radio, without any hesitation. thats why i called acura customer relations, for a definitive explantion of policy that should be uniform network wide. but they just passed the buck to the dealers to make the decision. i dont like it or agree with it, but i have to accept it.

i did actually find the cover i was looking for. if anyones interested simply go to ebay and type in........New Acura 4 Button smart key new Style Protective Silicone Case Jacket..........it doesnt solve the problem 100% because the lower part which is also scuffed and discolored is still exposed, but it covers and conceals the bulk of the damaged area. thanks again for your reply.

the keyfob is definitely low rent on this car.. it's like they forgot to lacquer the finish to keep it from wearing

The 2016 facelift RDX gets the new key fob the 2014 MDX and RLX have. No paint on it. We totally got shafted between 2013 to 2015. I have to say though, the key fob is a good example of the poor quality Acura used on the RDX across the board.

acura wouldnt replace the fob.
they requested photos, i sent them 4 showing each side damaged.
they denied it at the regional zone level. i then appealed to customer relations who agreed with the denial.
they claim its not covered under the warranty.
i asked if its not covered why did you request photos.
why didnt you just say not a covered item from the beginning. no answer.
im gonna get the cover jacket.

See the thread above. I ordered the parts online and made mine look brand new. It was easy.

i recieved the silicone cover but it doesnt work for me. it solved one problem but created 2 more. it was blocking the signal for keyless door entry. and when it was in my pocket the finish was a magnet for dust or lint. im not gonna buy parts to repair it because eventually the new one might fail. i just used a nail board and sanded all the worn silver paint off the bottom, and side panels. they are now matte black sides. matte grey bottom and look better already. i lightly coated the sides with a black sharpie to give it some lustre. might just leave the grey bottom alone.

If these are the ones you mentioned, I'd rather have a wear and tear on my keyfob. . Honestly I've never thought a key fob (which lives in our pockets with other keys and coins and inevitably get worn) wear would be such a big issue, but looking at the forum, it apparently is!

ray thats it.....not a big issue a little one ...we expect them over years to get worn , not months....acura could have done better and many feel they should have.

I agree Joe, they could have done a better job, mine has wear too and I like your idea of removing the silver coating altogether, I'll do that too.

On Amazon I always buy the leather fob cases....had both fobs for the '13 I just traded in in those....removed them...to keep for me....and the fobs looked brand new, after 3 yrs!! No wear, scratches, etc. Pretty easy to do. They are less than $10 in most cases.

I bought my 2013 RDX used and when I saw my keyfob I was disguised how bad it looks. So I decided to do a paint.

New to the forum and really glad to have found it. Just bought a '14 RDX Tech. The car is (so far) perfect, except the disgusting FOBs. I laid one on the table at a diner with friends and someone actually commented on it... geez! So glad to find I'm not the only one bothered by it.

You can buy an OEM replacement shell however, it is not cheap and will cost about $70 for the bottom, top and backup key shell.
See items 10,11,15: https://www.oemacuraparts.com/v-2013...--smart-unit-1

You can also buy a replacement shell from amazon however, the quality is not that great and the trunk icon is for the ilx but the price is much cheaper:

Keep in mind that with both options, the paint will come off
