Unhappy City MPG not more than 18

I have had about 1000 miles on my car now..and my gas mileage has been a dissapointment. So far I have been mostly driving in city traffic, stop and go, no heavy load just myself in the cuv, and I havent been able to achieve more than 18~. On mostly highway drives I was able to get close to 23. I had a TSX before which was giving me a good 34 on highway and 25~ in city.

I am filling it up with premium gas only hoping that it will improve mileage...but no!

Please advice.

TSX is a 4 cylinder, weighs 300 pounds less than, and is more aerodynamic than your RDX. That being said, stop and go traffic always kills gas mileage. What is your average mph?

Also, do you jackrabbit from stops? City driving often entails more aggressive starts and stops, in addition to the increased number of them. A heavy foot is going to be a problem for you if you really care about MPG

I have found that I get the best gas mileage when my average speeds are between 60 and 70.

My milage in Manhattan was around 18. Mixed conditions such as rush hour commutes on the Long Island Expressway and off hours errands is around 23. Off hour highway driving is closer to 28.

It's all about your right foot. I'm doing 18-19 city and 27-29 strictly on the freeway.

^^^ I agree with you. Combined highway and city and I get 8.2L/100km (almost 29 mpg for my US friends) which is far better than my TL at 9.8L/100km. Its all about how you hit the pedal when the light turns green.

I am great at "feathering" the pedal to optimize fuel efficiency.....actually, with the right person, I am good with feathers period *lol*

I agree. I have had my RDX for 3 weeks now. The mileage is not what was advertised. Previously I had a 2005 TL and the dealer informed me that the new RDX would be better. NOT!

However given that it is a SUV and a much better ride willing to live with it.

I have just over 3,000 miles on mine. We check fuel mileage each fill...just for curiosity and comparisons. We use the "old fashioned method"...do the math! We consistantly get between 22 and 24 mpg in town driving! I am quite pleased with those #'s. The computer is pretty acurate too.

I soon will be an all Acura garage. I will be taking delivery soon of a '13 TSX Spec. Edition in Silver Moon. Wanted white, but, too hard to find. I do like silver cars too. I will be putting my ASA polished lip 18's with Continental DWS's on the car to make it look more special. Not crazy about the stock wheels. Had this set on my '12 Accord Cpe. for awhile. Same tire size as the optional tire size for the TSX. Lucky me!! Wheels for Accords and Acuras cross fit with no issues.

The "old" method is always flawed because the auto shut off for your tank and gas station pump is always different. I'll take the calculated approach from the cars data.

It certainly is no more "flawed" than the cars system display. "Old" does not mean incorrect. If you use the same station most of the time, stop pumping at the first auto shut off each time, you will have pretty darn good accuracy...I'd trust that over the car's computer.

Acura's estimates are 19 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. After 1000 miles on hilly terrain of northern New Jersey I think those numbers are accurate and with a gentler touch on the gas pedal, I get 20 in city, 29+ highway and 24+ mixed. So, I think official Acure estimate is pretty fair as long as you don't step on it hard.

Funny you should mention that. Today was the first time I wanted to get from 45 to 80 ASAP and this thing will SCOOT! No turbo lag like our former XC60 But DANG, that engine is LOUD @ WOT.

Don't think that helped the mileage any.

I always clear and then leave the 2nd mileage counter between oil changes and on my last 9500 km interval the avg speed was 55 km/hr (so mostly city) and I averaged 10.2L/100 kms (27.6 mpg-Imperial galllon). Now considering it is has been really cold and snowy here for the last two months and I drive 120 km/hr when on the highway, I think that is pretty good mileage. I have seen 8.2L/100 (34.4mpg) on one trip back from Edmonton with wind at 120kmhr for 5 hrs. I was pretty impressed.

Mileage will always fluctuate and be the worst doing the break-in period. Between 1k-2k you will terrible numbers and as you reach the 3k-5k the numbers should be good. I would say once you reach the 3k mark, reset the cars computer and see what happens if you are still seeing power fuel economy.

How do you go about resetting the car's pc? Disconnect the battery?

It Gets Better

I agree that when the vehicles are new the mileage will suffer a bit. Also the time of year being colder for most will not help. I have about 1000 miles on mine and have averaged 18-19 with all driving in town. I'm light on the pedal, it will get better.

ive been doing a lot of city driving and get between 18-19 mpg. I noticed that if you use the steering wheel controls to change the dash setting to average miles or whatever its called........ leave it there and watch your mpg drop as you sit at a stop light

Mileage has been lower than expected for me as well (hitting about 15 mpg after 750 miles/mostly city/freeway traffic). I do drive a lot of hills, but am very light on the gas. (After 5+years with a Prius, I know how to hypermile well.) I've got a couple of longer trips planned which should help to balance out the city driving and hopefully help break in the tires.

The issue with the Honda 3.5 V6 is that while it can get very impressive highway mileage, it can drink gas like a V8 in city, stop and go... Oddy Minivan can get as low as 15mpg or worse, but get as much as 30mpg on highway...

Mileage

I also get 18 around town but on a recent trip from Valencia to San Jose I averaged 27 up (SUV loaded) and 28 back (empty). I'm satisfied.

Gas Mileage not as expected

I agree as I have almost 10,000 miles on my new 2013 RDX and have averaged only 22 mpg. This is a combination but 80% highway. They advertised 27 highway so I expected to be closer. MY previous 09 TSX advertised 31 highway and I averaged 31 on the same daily route, experiancing 38 hwy with the TSX. The only way I can get the rated 27 highway is long trips on roads with a 55 mph speed limit.

I get around 15-16mpg in city or traffic, but on an open highway I can hit 28-29mpg pretty easy at 65mph. I wonder if the trip computer is accurate though. The range at fill up says like 340 miles, but I actually only get about 250 miles per tank.

I noticed that when driving in the city and using cruise control and accelerate only with the button I get a better fuel economy. The computer will tell the engine to use only 4 cylinders when cruise control accelerating versus stepping on the pedal
