2014 RDX Transmission problems

Hi guys

(purchased mid March of this year)

Everything I've read about transmission problems in the RDX all say goto the dealer, which I am tomorrow morning, but I thought I'd share my problem just for future readers / maybe anyone has any insight.

Leaving for work this morning, 60F out, I drove not even 1/4 mile and the car begins to shift hard into 2nd gear. Almost as if it was in neutral and it dropped right into 2nd. And I say 2nd because the car moves at first. Most of my commute is city driving so I stop and start again at stop signs another 6 times and everytime i do; it continues to engage 2nd gear hard.

Thinking maybe some sub system didn't boot properly, I pull over. Put the car in park, completely turn it off; wait a minute, turn it back on and continue; now it's worse.

The check transmission light is on; Info light is on; the display on the dash between the MPH and RPM is flashing yellow at me saying Check Transmission and the gear indicator is cycling between what I could only assume was D, N and P - all the while continuing to engage 2nd gear hard at every acceleration.

I made it to work; parked, called and scheduled an appointment.

Get out of work just a couple hours ago; planning for the worst that I'm gonna have to call for a ride or something - no liquids on the ground (was expecting transmission fluid or something)

Turn on the car; all the errors are gone except the check transmission light.

Put the car in drive and make it all the way home fine; no lurching; no hard engage of 2nd gear (felt the car make it all the way through 5th).

Both commutes are the same - about 15 minutes stop and go 40mph through neighborhoods.

The car doesn't even have 2000 miles on it yet.

It's about a 25 mile / 30 minute drive to the dealer tomorrow morning. I'll take side roads to make sure I don't get stuck on the throughway but WT ???

So... The code told you Solenoid "C" was stuck in the on position, on a 3 month old, < 2000 miles car, causing the temporary malfunction - and your solution was to drain the transmission fluid and make sure it was clean?

It's a (google search) $118 part retail; wouldn't it be better to replace that, then if a gear were to fail or a more major malfunction occurred resulting in rebuilding the transmission?

Thank god for warranties. See you in another month when it fails again...

^ I don't see where he said he drained the trans fluid, he said he turned the car off and then back on...

OP how did this turn out?

My Rdx (2013 FWD with tech) has done something weird 2 or 3 times and I wanted to ask you for your opinion. This is my first Acura/honda and I have always heard that honda trans can shift rough.

Well, I have noticed that when doing spirited driving, revving the engine up to 5000-6000 rpm in 2nd or 3rd (in S mode), sometimes the upshift is really hard and I hear a loud clank sound. Then if I continue driving like that I am mostly unable to replicate it. It could be that the engine and trans are cold because it happens at the beginning of the drive.

Has anybody here experienced this?
is this normal?

thanks

I would not recommend you taking your vehicle to six grand when it is cold unless you want to have your transmission gone or engine replaced soon. Your vehicle should be driven easy till it reaches normal operating conditions which is said to be 5-10 minutes of easy driving. You are looking for trouble down the road with this vehicle if you keep it up. Just a heads up.

Something similar happened to me. After a weekend to Portland from Seattle, I came back and noticed that my transmission was shifting awkwardly and felt like it was jumping at weird RPMs. I turned off the engine and restarted hoping it'd resolve itself, then it went into flashing gear mode (indicator flashing P-N-D simultaneously) and the check transmission light on.

I called the Acura dealer immediately and they told me to come on in same day (this was a Saturday morning). They said it was possibly a "3rd gear pressure switch" that was faulty and needed to be replaced. They said they would order the part, replace it, and see if that fixed the issue.

Fast forward 4 days, get a call that it's all replaced and working properly. I asked the service guy and he said he's seen the part need replacing on older MDX's (2007-2009ish) but never on an RDX letalone one that had less than 10k miles on it.

My advice, take it in!
