Shutting the NAV off

As it turns out, the two threads I recently started (re: wallpaper and unverified areas) in this section are related.

I realized that if the nav is never turned on (the “enter” button not pressed) then the wallpaper displays and the “unverified area” notification no longer beeps. So far so good.

But there seems to be one piece missing: if you have used the GPS, there does not appear to be a way to turn it off without shutting the car off. Can that be right? Does anyone know of a way to do so?

In the 3G TL, you can do it as follows:

Hit setup, then find Display. In Display there are four options, Off, Auto, Day, Night. Assuming it is similar to the 3G, simply select off and you should be all set.

The unit in the current RDX is not the same. The day/night option is handled by a dedicated button on the front, and there is no "Setup/Display" option.

Hmmm. Haven't been in the current gen RDX, but seeing it is part of the Acura family I would have figured it would be somewhat similar. There is no setup button or menu at all? Can you change the color of the display or brightness, contrast?

The brightness/contrast can be set either using the button on the unit itself or there are more options using this "setup" screen.

As far as I have been able to determine, there is no "off" option. Even if black is selected using the button, the nav is still running in the background, and unverified areas will cause the unit to beep. Why someone thought that was a good idea is puzzling.

If that is truly the case, then I agree 100%. You can turn off every other thing, not being able to turn off the nav would be very silly.

I found a copy of the 2014 RDX Navigation manual on line and it says you can cycle through the illumination control from day to night to off using the illumination control button.

Well, I'll give that another try. But I thought I tried that and still got the unverified area beep when the screen was blank. I should be driving through an unverified area later tonight. If I don't get back to you by the morning, it means it didn't beep and I drove off the Earth.

Thanks for your follow up.

You must be near the end of the earth if you can so easily drive through an unverified area! In my area, and having Acura products for 10 years, I don't think I have ever been able to do so. Good luck

I just added my location. Actually, I grew up in Boston but have been living in LA for the last few decades. Just retired and moved outside a small town in Oregon - sometimes I think it IS near the end of the earth. And that's not a bad thing.

You should see how often I hear the "entering unverified area" as I drive daily in a small community in Eastern Canada....

Sorry to report that, as I thought, even with the display in the "off/black" mode, the unverified notification still beeps.

I try never to call anything "stupid", but in this case, I'll make an exception. Why would a driver constantly need to know that the database is missing information if he's not relying on the database for instructions or directions?
