iPhone ISO 6 and the RDX info
I am currently beta testing IOS 6 on my iphone and I wanted to let everyone know that the text messages feature is now working. So far in beta 3, I can't send responses but it receives them and reads them out loud to me.
Everything else seems to work just fine. I will try to keep you guys up to date as they release new betas. If you have any questions let me know.

I just tested it and it is still not working.

Hopefully they will fix this before the final release. I will test this function with each beta release and let you know.
Here is another interesting feature I think you will like. In IOS 6 you can designate individuals as VIPs, when you receive an email from them it goes into a special folder and it also appears on your lock screen.
But..... What I noticed today is when a VIP emails you and you are in your RDX it get read out loud just like a text message. Cool.

Unfortunately IOS 6 doesn't change that. That would probably take a firmware upgrade from Acura to support that feature.
Bumping this thread - it doesn't sound like the iPhone 5 has any substantial updates on any NFC hardware, that they've mentioned yet. I hope they do get the bluetooth audio up to the same level as the other devices.
I just tested the Gold Master of IOS 6 and here are the results.
The play function works on the nav if the iPhone is paused but you can not pause it from the nav, you can only start the playback. I verified this on the music app, Pandora and Spotify.
Just to complicate matters. both the play and pause functionality work just fine using the TWIT app. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/twit/id299663499?mt=8
So the functionality is there but the apps are not coded correctly.

Hi Lanman,
I started following this thread as I'm interested in the ILX, which will hopefully behave similarly (i think both models have SMS and pandora functionality). Your previous updates indicated that handsfree link will read your received text messages, but you're still unable to reply. With regards to the Gold Master release, was there any different behavior in the SMS functionality?
Also, when iOS 6 was previewed at WWDC (i think), didn't Apple mention partnering with manufacturers, including Honda, for Siri integration through the car's infotainment systems? Just wondering if this works at all with the golden master.
Thanks!
ps i'm a sw dev, but, i currently don't have a new acura to perform any testing with!

I have installed iOS 6 on my phone, but when I try to turn on text message in the phone settings on the RDX, it errs stating that it cannot setup ... try again. Anyone able to get around this?
Lanman ... Did you have to do anything unusual to get it to work?

I think the iPhone occasionally advertises what services it offers or the Acura querys the iPhone for available services.
We just tried two different iPhone 4 (plural) with iOS6 and we both got the text message setup error.
We will try again tomorrow.
Lanman: Thank you so much for testing iOS6 and the SMS feature in the 2013 RDX.
I've been waiting since I bought my 2013 RDX in April for this feature. After reading your post, I just set my iPhone 4 up with my car to enable the SMS feature. Here is what I've found (some of which you've stated)
- In the Bluetooth settings on your iPhone, you do have to go into the settings in the "HandsFreeLink" device listed and turn on "show notifications"
- After doing that, I started the car. It took about 1 minute for the system to allow me to adjust "message" settings. The car then did read the text message to me. However, I noticed it will stop reading the message after a certain length, which appears to be about 160 characters...which I guess has something to do with the limit on SMS messages.
- The system will not allow me to reply to a message however. It gives me the option, however after choosing an options, it states it is not able to send.
On a related topic, I noticed before upgrading to iOS6 today and setting up the SMS feature, when my iPhone 4 (with iOS5.X) was connected to bluetooth and I received a text message, neither the phone nor the car would play a sound like I normally get on my phone when I get a text message. This appears to be happening now (after upgrading to iOS6 and setting up the SMS feature) but the screen in the car is at least displaying a message telling me I have a new message...so better than nothing I guess. Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks again for all the info and as you test future releases of iOS I look forward to your comments and findings!

Go to: Settings - Bluetooth. Under "devices" you should see "HandsFreeLink" listed. To the right is a blue circle with an arrow pointing to the right. Press the blue circle and the settings for that device will appear. Turn on "show notifications" and/or other settings you may want.

The receiving of SMS is a huge step in the right direction. I hope that there will be an update to IOS 6 that fixes the send issue. I will be receiving the Iphone 5 tomorrow and am interested to see if the new phone will make a difference. I will provide an update.
DRWEBBER: Correct. With iOS6, you will be able to see and hear the text message but NOT reply to them via the controls in the car. You of course can reply using your phone though.
Surfer88: Agree being able to receive SMS's is a good step, but still frustrating that you can't send. Look forward to seeing if anything is different on the iPhone 5...mine is a few weeks away still!
For those wondering, Apple added Bluetooth MAP support in iOS6 and thus why we are now able to receive messages. Since other phones/operating systems allow you to send message (blackberry, etc.), I'm assuming Apple blocked or left off the "sending" part of Bluetooth MAP...can only hope they include it in future iOS releases soon!

Is anyone else having an issue receiving calls via bluetooth with the iPhone 5? I can make calls without any issues but when someone calls me I cannot hear them and they cannot hear me, the workaround is to switch the call from bluetooth to iphone then back to bluetooth (on the phone itself). I have a 2013 ILX (no tech) which I assume is the same system as the RDX.
My previous phone worked fine (iPhone 4s) and the new phone works fine in my wife's car (2012 Sienna), I'm thinking the problem might be compatibility with the car's bluetooth system but I wanted to see if anyone else is having this issue before I take it any further.

I am having the same exact issue. The same work around works for me. Major pain in the a**.

A call to handsfreelink basically led nowhere. They have not tested the phone yet. The first agent I talked to said it took them 5 months just to get the phone to test. He then talked about how the wifi was interfering with the 4s and all this other nonsense that didn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling. His supervisor then got on the line and told me he'd be in touch. He said mine was the first instance of this that they have heard of this. They obviously don't read this board! Give them a call at 1.888.528.7876 so they can get more instances of it so they know it's not a one-off.
Always great to be a pioneer! Stay tuned, I'll post when I hear back (they said they'd call back next week).
Here's the reply I received from Acura Handsfreelink. It's absurd to me that (i) they rely on the carriers to get the phone to them instead of them taking the initiative and getting the phone themselves and (ii) it could take up to 6 weeks to see if the phone is compatible. Now, if the iphone 5 is not compatible with a 2013 model, how many of these do you think Acura will sell?
Thank you for contacting us in regards to your HandsFreeLink system.
When a new phone is released, it is up to the carriers to send in the phone to be tested with the vehicle. We have not yet received an iPhone 5 from any of the carriers. We cannot say whether or not the phone is compatible until after it has completed the testing process. Once a phone has been received for testing, the process generally takes between three and six weeks to complete.
There is nothing that can be done on our end that will cause the carriers to send the phone in for testing any faster. We apologize for any inconvenience.
If you have any additional questions or comments, please feel free to contact us at 888-528-7876. We are available Mon-Fri from 7:00am-8:00pm CT.

This seems awfully odd. How many different mobile operating systems are there? And honestly even if Honda had to cough up money to buy an iPhone 5 for each of the carriers, how much would that really cost? Consider I'm sure a large number of their customers will eventually own one!
New iphone 5 pearing with RDX 2013 tech
Hi everyone, I am new to this kind of forum, but I really enjoying people like me who own an Acura.

Just purchased my RDX 2 days ago and have spent waaaay too much time fooling around with getting my iPhone set up. This is my 4th Acura so I'm not new to the concept of the Acura tech package. Traded in my 2009 TSX and my iPhone worked great in every way in that car. Cabled, Bluetooth, phone, music, everything. With all of your posts I'm hoping to have the text message working now. thank you! Hoping you can help with this: when I cable up via USB the audio screen shows song, album & artist info for a flash then goes blank. I have yet to see any album artwork and i did check yes for that. Nor can I use my steering wheel controls to move to next/previous song. Is this an Acura problem that they can fix at the dealer? Who do I call about this? I have an iPhone 4S but recently upgraded to iOS6. Help!
Problem with answering iphone call using bluetooth
Hi everyone, I am new here. Got here looking for answer to my problem with my Acura RDX 2013 I just got last month. I also just got an Iphone 5 and paired it with the RDX. I noticed that everytime I receive a call on my Iphone and I press pick up on the steering wheel button to answer it, somehow the call gets transferred but I can't hear a voice nor the person on the other line hears me. The phone stops ringing tho so I know the call was taken. I go to the phone if may be it did not transfer but I don't hear anything on the phone either, the same with the person on the other line. When I press transfer on the Iphone or on the RDX display the call gets transferred to the Iphone. When I press transfer the second time then it starts working in the RDX. I've tried it for at least 10x and it has been consistently like that. I feel like the call gets transferred to RDX but appears to be partially as the voice on both lines weren't, but you know the call is still active as it works on the handset if you transfer the call back to the handset, but then it works in the RDX when you transfer it back after transferring it to the handset. Has anyone had this problem? What did you do to fix it if you have? Thanks.
Happy day
Today Apple did in iOS update and voila! My phone now works perfectly in my new Acura. Awesome!

I am having the same issues with an ILX Hybrid Tech and the iPhone 5 with updated IOS 6.01 software. Can make calls fine, but when i try to answer there is silence on both ends. Is there a way to "reset" hands free link? Maybe like a hard restart or refresh that might solve it?
As with most computers the first advice from IT people is to restart the system. So any clue on how to do this aside from turning the car on and off?
