iPhone 5 and RDX 2013

Hi, I'm thinking of getting the new iPhone 5 but wondering if there is any problem connecting it to my RDX. I have RDX 2013 with Tech Package, currently using iPhone 4S.
Anyone try iPhone 5 with the new lightning connector? Can you use the supplied lightning to usb and plug that into the RDX? Does it work the same way as with iPhone 4? Does Pandora still works?

Thanks

Derrick

My family has the 4, 4S and I now have the 5. The 4 and 4S were glitchy with my 2013 RDX and 2012 CRV. The iPhone 5 has been flawless using Pandora...that is all I listen to any more. I say go for it.

I have upgraded to ios 6 on all my phones but have not tried connecting the upgraded 4 or 4S to my RDX yet.

Had my iphone 5 for a week. Outbound calls work. Bluetooth audio works. Picking up calls does not. Whenever a call comes in and you hit pickup either on the steering wheel or the dash it tries calling back the number that is calling you. The result is silence on your end and on the end of the person who is calling you. You can answer the call on your phone and then hit audio source and switch it to handsfreelink but that defeats one of the major purposes of the link.

A call to handsfreelink basically led nowhere. They have not tested the phone yet. The first agent I talked to said it took them 5 months just to get the phone to test. He then talked about how the wifi was interfering with the 4s and all this other nonsense that didn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling. His supervisor then got on the line and told me he'd be in touch but that this was the first instance of this that they have heard of. Always great to be a pioneer! Stay tuned, I'll post when I hear back.

Here's the reply I received from Acura Handsfreelink. It's absurd to me that (i) they rely on the carriers to get the phone to them instead of them taking the initiative and getting the phone themselves and (ii) it could take up to 6 weeks to see if the phone is compatible. Now, if the iphone 5 is not compatible with a 2013 model, how many of these do you think Acura will sell?

Thank you for contacting us in regards to your HandsFreeLink system.

When a new phone is released, it is up to the carriers to send in the phone to be tested with the vehicle. We have not yet received an iPhone 5 from any of the carriers. We cannot say whether or not the phone is compatible until after it has completed the testing process. Once a phone has been received for testing, the process generally takes between three and six weeks to complete.

There is nothing that can be done on our end that will cause the carriers to send the phone in for testing any faster. We apologize for any inconvenience.

If you have any additional questions or comments, please feel free to contact us at 888-528-7876. We are available Mon-Fri from 7:00am-8:00pm CT.

My iPhone 5 works like a charm pickup calls, making calls, pandora...anything that I want to do so far.

With the 4 and 4S I had to turn off WiFi or they would disconnect the bluetooth randomly. Now that is fixed for me.

I bought my RDX yesterday and am having this very issue with my iPhone 5 and the handsfreelink, but it seems to be hit and miss. I has some calls come through fine and others that were completely silenced. Tried reconnecting the phone, rebooting the phone, etc. only thing that worked was a non-iPhone.

I spoke with AppleCare today and they said this is a known issue. A Sr Advisor sent a request to the engineers to determine a fix for the problem. I will post any updates I receive.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experience with iPhone 5 on RDX 2013. I upgraded from my iPhone 4S to iPhone 5 for a week now and seeing the same call pick up silence issue. My iphone 5 works fine with my other car and my RDX works fine with iPhone 4s running ios 6. So I think the issue is something with the Bluetooth chip on iPhone 5, let's hope this issue can be fix with software update the next time Apple update iOS.
Another issue I noticed is the ability to receive text and reply to text. With the iPhone 4S running ios 6, the car will read the text to me automatically when it come in, however, the "Reply" option is not available (gray out). For iPhone 5, the "reply" option is available however it does not works most of the time. Sometime this "reply" option will allow you to do it but most of the time it gray out.
Do you see the same problem with text reply?

Thanks

Derrick

iPhone 5 and also get the intermittent "answer a call and silence" issue. I haven't spent more than 2 minutes trying yet but it did tell me initially my phone was not compatible with the texting support. I'm not sure what that is about but it appears it works for others so I'll probably figure it out or eventually read the manual. :-)

I just used the text message function for the first time today. I can get the car to read the message outloud, but am also experiencing the problem of an inability to reply. The system says the function is available, but when I select a preprogramed response, the system returns an error (says it was unable to send).

I just got an RDX 2012 and an Iphone 5 about the same time a month ago. I have the same problem of "silence issue" with picking up calls from thru bluetooth. Pandora and text messaging are non-functional giving me error messages. Looks like a problem with all RDXs paired with Iphone 5's. Tried my Iphone 4 & Iphone 5 handsfree link calling with my Sienna 2006 and worked perfectly. Points to me that this may be an RDX issue and not an Iphone issue. I will check on the fixes I read here tho and see if they will make it work.

ok just tested the iphone 4 on RDX 2013 and the handsfree calling worked fine. No silence issue. Tested the iphone 5 again and still picking up calls still wont work. Still silence on both ends of the line. If you transfer to handset tho, call will work, then when you transfer it back to handsfree link then call will work this time. But, beats the purpose of bluetooth handsfree calling. One thing tho, when connected to via USB, handsfree link silence issue is resolved. But still, would love just to get in the car and drive without having to hook up phone and unhook it when leaving the car.

Just talked with Handsfreelink. They said that it'll be first or second week of November before they'll have an update on whether or not it's the phone or some care software issue. For those that want to call them themselves, here's the number 888-528-7876. I'm guessing it's going to be an Apple issue as there are other cars (Infinity and Nissan) that have the same issue according to the Apple support forums.

I have found a work around. When you receive a call, click on the transfer button twice (or phone button on the dash first if the phone screen isn't up) and the call will transfer back to the phone then back to the RDX. You should be able to hear the call now. Of course, the big issue with this work around is the time it takes to transfer the call twice, but it's not that long of a wait.

Apple released iOS 6.0.1 update today and I was excite hoping this update will fix the issue described on this thread. Unfortunately for all of us RDX user with iPhone 5, this update did not correct the problem.
Has anyone try to call Apple care about this issue? Our only hope now is for Apple to fix this issue via software update for the iPhone. I don't think Acura or HandFreelink people can fix it since I never heard this type of system ever have any update

Unfortunate that IOS 6.0.1 did not help.

I suggest we all drop Handfreelink a note about this:

It is funny because I tried it today morning immediately after the update and I seem to be able to receive the call with out any issue.. I was ecstatic. ! But then later the call issue returned.. It seems that No one has fixed nothing..

BTW, I did make a formal complaint with Apple care about this issue last week.. If not this time, may be next update that is expected in the second week of Dec.. We can just wait, thats all we can do right now.. Coz, Handsfreelink contact was clear in saying that its Apple's problem and tehy will fix it.. ! Apparently..

We have been experiencing the same "can't pick up" issue with iPhone 5 and 2013 RDX. Handsfreelink and Apple, both of whom we've dealt with, just point their fingers at each other. Today our Acura salesman called to say that iPhone 5 works with new model MDX and that he thinks there is a different supplier for the Bluetooth receivers in that vehicle. He also reports that a regional Acura official of some kind has gotten involved to try to resolve this issue. Too early to get any hopes up, but....

Is it possible that you had the WiFi disabled when it worked OK?

Acura has a new service bulletin 12-034 to update the HFL control unit software. Call your dealer service and mention it. It is covered under warranty.

An Update from Apple Support Communities

Re: iPhone 5 Bluetooth issues with car
Jan 16, 2013 7:13 AM (in response to Redbirds16)
Your problem is the prevailing one. Good news for the Nissan/Infiniti owners. A disk will be sent out this week to dealers which fixes this problem. Call your service manager and make sure he knows to call you to set up an appointment when the disk is received. You can call 800-Nissan1 to confirm.

There is nothing in the current IOS updates that will remedy this problem.

I have been in constant contact with a person in the executive offices at Apple. They know of the problem and are working on it as well.

I would keep the pressure on the other vehicle mfgs. Honda/Acura seems to be the next largest problem on this thread.

Once I receive the update I will update this board.

A 28 Jan. Update from Apple Support Communities

Re: iPhone 5 Bluetooth issues with car
Jan 28, 2013 12:33 PM (in response to sschwar2)
I justed loaded 6.1 to my iPhone 5, and it resolved my issue with the Chevy Equinoox. Inbound calls to the car via bluetooth now answer and remain connected.

The above was posted a few hrs. ago on the Apple forum thread dedicated to this issue. I have the iOS 6.1 update loaded on my i5 now, standby for an update if this solves the inability I have w/ answering incoming calls on my '13 RDX.

Well The 6.1 Update Appears To Work

A sample of one but I just received my first incoming call on my i5 using the HFL. One can only hope I am the 1st of many here that have the same outcome.

I merely downloaded the 6.1 iOS update, had someone call, used the HFL to answer them & boom we connected, no dealer vist whatsoever.

The service bulletin Acura had did not work.

IOS 6.1 seemed to have fixed the issue with regards to picking up incoming call using the steering control.

Not Yet... buts hopefully it's coming. The reply text msg that are pre loaded are very basic replies. You probably wouldn't use them anyway
