Smile Cool new device to link iPhone with RDX

Check out this cool device that I just preordered for $69.95. It has many useful features like:
  • Driving FeedBack
  • OnStar like feature (Beta)
  • Connects to the RDX computer and decodes error codes and even lets you clear them.
  • Automatically remembers where you parked your car without doing anything

Checkout the video on their website:

No thanks, when this company gets sold to an insurance company or Cerberus or something the data will get sold to an insurance company and/or marketing firm. They even cover that possibility in their privacy disclosure...or the information can be subpoenaed and the opposing lawyer only thanks you for having the data they need (to make your life suck) so neatly organized for them.

Hey AmberB,

I respect your opinion but...

The only fault with that logic is that law enforcement and an opposing lawyer all ready have very easy access to all of this kind of information. Using a subpoena when necessary they could:
  • Connect to the computer in your RDX and download the history to get speed, G-force, acceleration, braking and other information.
  • Use the logs inside your smart phone to determine your recent whereabouts, texting history and phone calls.
  • Access your bank or credit card company to gain access to your transaction history prior to an accident. ie. your bar tab

So the only way to escape this collection of personal data is to:
  1. Drive a pre-1996 vehicle (Be careful there are actually many cars with on board computers before the law in 1996 that made OBD mandatory)
  2. Don't carry any type of cellphone (I was going to say smartphone but the risk is still present with a standard feature phone)
  3. Pay cash for everything
  4. Oh yeah, most stores and intersections have cameras so wear a mask at all times.

By the way, nice car!

While the above point is true, the data stored in the car's "computer" is limited and is overwritten when it's maximum data it stores is reached. What makes me MORE uneasy is that if AcuraLink worked better and DID NOT USE YOUR PHONE (and money), your insurance company might want to have this information continuously streamed to THEM.
