tire rotation

I have a 2013 RDX with Tech and FWD. How often should the original tires (Michelin Primacy MXM4) be rotated?

about every oil change! so that the tires wear evenly and that you could spot potential problems by looking for funny wear.

A fwd vehicle has two things working against the front wheels; its the driving wheels and steering wheels. this means the front tires take a heavier dose of wear

Don't forget to cross rotate. I rotate my tires every M.I.D. oil change and do front/back, cross rotate, front/back, etc... Promotes even wear, keep tire noise down, and help make the tires last longer.

The reason why I like non-directional tires so I can do the cross rotations.

Do you know if the Michelin Primacy MXM4 tires are non-directional?

In general, rotating tires every oil change sounds good. Before we got the RDX, we did oil changes and tire rotations every 5000 miles or so. With the RDX, we have about 6000 miles and the indicator still says we have 40% oil life left. Should I rotate the tires now, before the oil change? If I wait longer (say another 1000 miles), will I void the tire warranty?

Thanks for the information,

Gregg

^^ The OEM tires on the RDX are non directional...the easy to tell is by seeing an arrow on the sidewall. As Mrgold35 stated, do the cross rotation....the instruction manual shows the proper way to do it (if you do it yourself).

I would still stick with the tire rotation along with the M.I.D. oil change schedule to keep it in sync and easier to remember. I use an app called "Road Trip" on my iPhone to track all my gas, service and maint on my vehicles. I sync the info to my Dropbox account and the data is x-fer/sync'd to the wife's and son's phone for their vehicles.

On my TSX, I had Bridgestone 960 directional tires; which, I could only rotate front/back. I noticed my tires were wearing more on the outside edge on the driver side way more compared to the passenger side outside edge. I looked at the way I was driving in my commute and I was taking more hard right turns (accelerating on clover leaf hwy ramp or a hard right hand turns at intersection) and easier left turns. The hard rights were wearing the tires more and there wasn't nothing I could do except drive like a grandma (which was not gonna happen). I ended up switching out to Conti DWS tires after 30,000 miles because I wore the bridgestones down too much on the edge (started to see the ply/wire mesh).

I still drive the same way and get the same wear on the Conti DWS; but, I spread the wear over 4 tires instead of 2. I am on my second set of Conti DWS and I got the full 50,000 miles from the first (front/back, cross rotation, front/back, etc...).

^good reason and explaination of the cross rotation, spreading the wear across all 4!

i run directional summer tires. I eat through tires daily.

I guess that was my question -- should I have the oil changed and the tires rotated at the same time.

It's been 14 or 15 years since my last new car. Before the RDX, I always had the oil changed and the tires rotated every 4000 to 5000 miles. But with the RDX, it sounds like the oil changes may only occur every 7000 or 8000 miles, so I wondered if I should have the tired rotated more often than that.

Also, if I have the tires and oil done at the same time, I guess I will have the Acura dealer rotate the tires. Any wild guess as to how much that should cost? For most of the last 15 years, I have gotten free tire rotations from the store where I buy my tires, but until the OEM tires wear out, I guess I will have the Acura dealer rotate them.

Thanks,

Gregg

I don't know if you have a Discount Tire in your area. You can get road hazard warranty with rotation and balance for the tire life even if you did not purchase from them.

I do the rotation/balance with Discount and I do alignment with Firestone (lifetime alignment with Firestone). I also bring my own oil to the dealership for A1 or B1 service. I change my own cabin air filter and use a K/N drop-in filter (clean K/N once a year). Acura usually charges me $26 for A1 and B1 service.

Yes, we got tires for our other car at Discount Tire and I have been very happy with the service there. When it's time to replace the OEM tires, I plan to buy new ones at Discount Tire. I like the free rotations, but I did not know (or had forgotten) that I could buy that service even if I did not get my tires there. I may check into it if the Acura dealer charges too much.

Thanks,

Gregg

What would be the recommended miles interval for tire rotation? If you run two sets of tires the oil change system does not apply.

If you run a summer/winter tires, you might have to mark the tires at the end of each season to do the rotation when you put them on for the next. This might be a bigger deal for a fwd vehicle compared to an awd. My RDX and MDX usually run a 50/50 or 60/40 power split most of the time in normal driving. Tire wear is more even across 4 tires with sh-awd compared to my fwd TSX. I could go bald on my TSX front tires and still have +50% tread on the rears if I never rotated my tires (my daughter's current problem on her Mazda 3 5-door and rotations are FREE at Discount Tires ).

We have about 1,600 miles on our RDX. I plan - and would recommend - rotating the tires at 5,000 miles regardless of whether you change the oil or not. This should be done to promote even wear. At 1,600 miles I am at 80 percent on the oil. I plan to change the oil every 5,000 regardless of what the percentage oil reading is. Should it reach 15 percent prior to 5,000 miles I would change it at that point.
