Tire Pressure Alert - Wrong ?

Hello,

Mine is 2015 AWD RDX, driven 3428 only. First service not done yet. It was sitting in garage for 30 days then I resumed it. After a week, it is showing me "check tire pressure" alert (see attached pic). Though pressure is almost same in all 4 tires. Is there something, I can reset and fix it or I need to worry ? Any tips ?

Thanks

Check the inside of the driver door jam. It should tell you what the tire pressure should be. 28lbs seems low. I believe it is suppose to be at 33lbs. If it's under, that will trigger your TPMS light.

I could be wrong on the recommended tire pressure since its off my head but I'll verify in the morning.

Here is another primer on tire pressures and TPMS.

A non damaged tire will lose 1 psi per month and 1 psi for each 10 degree drop in temps.

From the display shown on the photo, it appears that the dealership set the same pressure all around - which is odd because most dealerships couldn't get the same pressure on all four corners if somebody held a gun to their head.

We don't know where the OP is but we've had a warm summer everywhere so let's assume that the temps were 80 degrees. Let's now assume that the temps are in 40s in the morning.

That's 4psi right there.

We've also had 4 months since the pressure was set, so that's another 4psi.

Accordingly, we can assume that the dealer set the psi to 36 on all 4 corners when they set it in July.

The OP needs to go to his local gas station and set his tire pressures as recommended and recheck every month.

According to the TREAD Act, the TPMS system needs to alert at least when the psi drops 25% from recommended.

If 35psi is recommended then 20% is 7psi and 25% is 8.75psi. Accordingly, alerting at 28psi is accurate as most manufacturers have set their systems to alert between 20 and 25%.

I am in Torrance (CA), which is moderate climate. Current temperature here is 54. When I took this pick, it was 58 in evening. On a sunny day, it shows me 31, 31, 30, 31, but still alert shows for upper left and lower right tire.

Your TPMS is working properly - it is alerting when your tire pressure is low.

Set your tires to the proper pressure when cold and you'll be fine.

Cold is defined as the car sitting overnight and before the car is driven.

Once the alarm activates at 28 it becomes somewhat "latched in".

By that I mean it will not clear out when the pressure rises to just 29. The pressure needs to increase substantially closer to the correct pressure before the alarm will clear itself.

Your pressure should be set first thing in the morning before any sunlight has warmed your tires. In your case this would probably result in a pressure of less than 28. So adjust your tires to the correct pressure before you cause damage to them, and fix your alarm at the same time.

I've never run my OEM Michelins with less than 35 psi. And, they sometimes get up to 40 psi on a hot day.

28 psi is dangerously low pressure for just about any tire.

And, for what it's worth, my old Honda Ridgeline would always alert me when any tire got down to 28 psi.

Read the third post - 35 front, 33 rear to start and adjust from there.

I got this mostly for our bikes; but, it work perfectly for all three of my vehicles. I always need to adjust my PSI monthly in my bikes/cars because of outdoor temps and normal air leakage. It can be 25 degrees in the morning and 50-55 degrees by the afternoon. I have to set the PSI a little higher to eliminate early morning alarms (and being +5000ft also effects PSI readings also by 1 1/2-2 points). You just set the PSI and it stops once filled, done in 5 mins compared to driving to Discount Tires or local gas station, (Amazon, $90):

Tire pressure is really important. It relates to drive safety, tire wear, ride quality, etc. It's amazing how many people almost ignore the tire pressure (plus you can get it for free at lots of tire places and don't have to get out of your car). Kinda like wiper blades (and keeping the inside of the windshield clean). Very inexpensive maintenance but important to the car's safety and performance.

I leave the TPMS monitoring on my mid in the TL when I'm running my 20's with stretched tires. Crucial!
