Timing Belt Replacement (B14 service) - 2017 Tech

I had the B14 service completed on my 2017 Tech. I had 106,670 miles. This is the timing chain service. I decided to post this hoping it might help others with pricing when they get to this service. I have an independent mechanic who specializes in Honda and Acura perform all my maintenance and repairs. I've been really happy with his work.

The full B14 service includes timing belt replacent, tensioner replacement, water pump replacement, serpentine belt replacement, coolant flush, spark plug replacement, oil change and tire rotation. All for $1458. If I had talked to him before hand, I likely would have had him wait for the water pump but......it's either pay you now while everything is out or do it later and pay more labor. Looking at the invoice, the pricing looks really fair.

I can give more information if you like.

An Aisin TKH-002 timing kit costs $200, a set of spark plugs is $60, a serpentine belt is $10, 2gal Honda Type 2 coolant $50
it takes 4.5 hours of labor to replace the timing belt kit and spark plugs. So your mechanic charges you $200 an hour. Do you think $200 an hour is a fair price?

I'm sorry, but it’s not your fault that someone wants a lot of money for their job.
Perhaps this is a problem in myself, because I always give people a choice of what to order and who will order. When I order myself, in order to insure my job, I give a markup of 50% for parts, but 95% of cases people refuse and order parts themselves. There are a lot of dishonest mechanics who give markup of 150-200%

Altair47 gave you the best prices for the parts through Rockauto. Even the drive belt and OEM spark plugs can be purchased through Rockauto at much better than dealer prices. My independent Honda/Acura mechanic would not use anything but OEM Honda/Acura parts if I wanted his warranty for the work. He said he was protecting himself from bada aftermarket parts that he could not get refunds for if they failed. The Aisin kit has shown to be very dependable. SO for the later timing belt changeout for myTL and my wife's RDx, I used the Aisin kit and did the work myself. Saved a lot of money and had no problems with the parts so far. This is your call. You can save a lot of money by doing the work yourself.

But if you have a reputable mechanic you trust to do this work and back lit up using OEM parts, there is some significant piece of mind with this option.......your call on this issue.

I think $1458 is a typical and not unreasonable price. Those who do their own work often advocate that others should do the same, but not everyone has the time or inclination to do that - and there are plenty of threads on here where owners have done their own work and need to ask help solving some kind of problem afterwards. You are not just paying for the mechanic's hourly rate, there's plenty of overhead that is covered as well...and it's somewhat governed by the local market and supply/demand as well.

$1458 is just about standard for the job, if not the same as the dealer in some cases. I think on the old receipts I have of my RDX when I owned it, the previous owner paid a similiar amount to do that service. My private mechanic who is an old family said they would've done the timing belt job for like $600-$800 if I remember correctly. I would shop around elsewhere, and see what the dealer would charge. If the dealer's price is identical, just do it with them at that point.

I certainly can relate to this. I bought all the parts from Rockauto and started the job myself. But due to a stupid mistake which cost me $450 extra I wish I had let a pro mechanic do it. Unless you are very savvy in car repair this is a daunting task. No everyone can do it properly. Even a half tooth deviation in TB can cause major issues. I also understand the rip-off practice by mechanics but if one can find a reasonable shop I highly recommend let them do it. Asking nearly $1500 for parts and labor may be a bit off but still worth the convenience and lower risk given it is perhaps done once on the life time of the car.

I just received a quote from my local Acura dealer yesterday: $2,287.56. Sounds very high to me.

Your instincts are correct. Google search your local area for an independent acura / honda specialty shop it may save you if you find one.
They also are sometimes flexible on you providing your own parts; thus, saving you again on their retail mark-up on parts procured for you?

Yah that's absurd. Definitely look at other shops that specialize in japanese cars.
