My windshield cracked horizontally. I will have to get it replaced. What do these things usually cost? Should I go to a dealer or one of those auto glass businesses? I assume Geico will pay for part of the replacement. Thanks.

 

I would call the autodials business andante a quote. But make sure they use OEM glasses only, some of them use aftermarket items since the cost is about 1/3 only. I guess dealer will use only OEM equipment.

 

If you want OEM, GEICO will almost certainly make you pay the difference between the cost of aftermarket.

On a side note, I found Safelite to be worthless to repair chips on windshield. The chip almost disappears but within a month it is clearly visible again. That was the case with any chip repair I had done by them.

 

Funny- we have had chips fixed and they don't reappear in my experience. Some don't completely disappear in the first place.

As for the windshield- Safelight will use OEM glass if it is requested. Progressive paid for OEM when I requested it because our car was within 1yr of purchase. They came to my wife's work and replaced it in the lot- no issues since. Don't think they would do OEM on a '14 but it doesn't hurt to ask..

 

I had to replace the windshield on my '15 RDX about 3 weeks after I got it (new). Priced out a Pilkington aftermarket unit vs OEM glass, and for my $0 deductible comprehensive policy, it was either get it free with the Pilkington, or pay $500 to have the OEM glass. The Pilkington was a great replacement and was optically-perfect for the nearly 3 years I had the vehicle. Also had good luck with PGW glass on the Mini Cooper I had replaced in a similar timeframe. OEM glass is good - but also not always perfect.....

 

Check your policy. Some will pay the full cost of windshield replacement if the crack is larger than a dollar bill, repair if the crack is smaller than that.

Aftermarket windshields can be as good as OEM. An installer explained it to me this way. Car manufacturer orders X-thousand windshields. When those are all produced the mold is sold to the windshield manufacturer who continues to make replacements. The only difference is the windshield doesn't have the automaker's logo in the corner. If your OEM glass is acoustic, make sure you get that in a replacement (it'll say so, see attachment).

I've had excellent service and quality from Safelite (windshields last about 3 years before pitting or rocks require replacement where I live) but you probably have other windshield repair businesses in your area. Check with your BBB for complaints. Dealers usually farm the job out then charge 15% extra (or more).
