negoition tips and tricks HELP!!!!!
Hi all im from calgary canada and im gonna go into the car dealership tommorow and look at a brand new rdx what are some good tips i should use when buying so i can save thousands on a car and if anyone is from canada let me know what they paid for there rdx and what free things they go thank you all i recently went to a dealer 2 days ago and had a really crappy experience but this time im going to a diffrent dealer with confidence......
Acura had 2500 off in Sep and Oct . Got 500 extra off (no trade) and 10% off accessories on 2014 AWD Tech and they waived document fees and locking nuts. I had salesman email me details and confirm there would be no extra fees/costs before I went for final test drive
Good Luck

Thank you everyone for the advice and hand filer how much is 3000$ under invoice on the tech model. And did you ask to get the invoice price and then negotiate for 3000$ under.

Banana13: I would suggest investigating 2 services the Automobile Protection Association offers - (1) obtaining a detailed price report for the RDX, and (2) referral to a recommended dealer / broker. See the apa.ca website. Cost is around $50 I think and well worth the money IMO. Number (1) will tell you how much the dealer paid Honda Canada for the vehicle. Number (2) will refer you to a dealer / broker who will sell you the vehicle for a fixed price above dealer cost if you don't want to haggle with a dealer over price. Hope this helps.
Thanks John. But does apa actually work because I checked a website and they gave the invoice price on a tech rdx around 42 almost 43 and the msrp is 46 as we know and this is from canada. Also how do I use the invoice price as a advantage to pay below invoice. What are the magic words you should say when talking to salesmen and what not to say ???
I've heard of websites like unhaggle . That give you the invoice and dealers competing with each other to sell you a car...........

I paid 46500 out the door (so incl tax and their delivery fees) for a 2014 RDX Tech. I got invoice pricing from unhaggle and approached a number of dealerships for their best price.

OUCH!
OTown must be in Canadia! I know 'banana' is; but DANG!, it hurts to read that number!!!
Since the RDX is available in limited varieties, it's pretty easy to make an apples to apples comparison on price. An AWD tech is the same as another AWD tech. If there are multiple dealers you are willing to buy from, you may be able to do your negotiating by email. I let 3-4 dealers know I was going to buy by a certain date, and that I was checking prices at several dealers, then waited to see what the best offer was. They knew they were in a competitive situation and all made solid offers. I've purchased two cars this way, and it worked well both times.
Both times were "buyers markets", and the dealers were forthcoming with bids via email. I'm not sure this would work as well in any market situation, or if there are limited dealers in the area.

Just out of curiosity, is there any incentive/financial benefit to purchasing the Lexus RX that is made in Ontario vs an imported vehicle?
I come from England so I try and focus on how much cheaper cars are here than there rather than how much cheaper you guys have it over Canada.
A big discrepancy is about $15k between the Infiniti FX between Canada and the US.
A VW (Golf) GTI is about 1.5 times the price in Europe than US despite being built there.
I would look up the invoice price of the car...carcostcanada.com would be a place to look it up for a small fee.
I would also have alternatives in mind; so, as mentioned, be ready to walk away from the negotiation if you are not getting your price. In most situations (at least what I've been in), if you have 2-3 alternatives and negotiate seriously with the dealerships, you can get them into a bidding war with each other in a way.
With this ready, take the invoice price, add in the tax and start with 3% profit and work upwards from that. So, as an example, for my FX50S, I gave them 3.5% profit while having them bid against the BMW dealership for an X5d...worked out marvelously as I ended up with $6000 off the Infiniti.
So, hope it helps and happy shopping!

So the invoice price for tech is around 43 and the msrp is 46 and how do I exactly use this for my advantage. Do I just say the invoice is 43 and tell them I want a price lower or do I need proof for them to believe me kinda confused.....?.
Invoice is 40655 for the Tech.
I email bombed dealers saying I wanted to buy immediately and asked for their lowest prices out the door inc all costs and said I was aware of the current invoice cost and incentives and wanted as close to that plus del and tax as possible.
Like I said I paid 46500 inc del and tax and all costs. Some dealers quoted $53k

I am correct then in assuming you got the RDX tech below invoice / dealer cost?
By the way, what part of the country are you in?

When I paid the APA membership fee this entitled me 5 vehicle invoice details. There is a sample invoice detail report on their website (for an audi a4) that gives an indication as to the type of info they give you. The APA also gave me the name of a local dealer and contact person at the dealer who who would sell me the car i was interested in at the time (a TSX) for a few hundred dollars above dealer cost (I did this back in 2009; I forget what the exact amount was). In effect they were quoting me a set/no haggle price that I could choose to accept or not. In my particular case I then emailed all the Acura dealers in my area (I live in the greater Toronto area, so there are a lot), quoting tnis information, and asking if anyone could beat the APA guaranteed price I had already been quoted. In my particular case no one could beat the APA price.
At the time incentive was 1500 so
40655 invoice - 1500 incentive + 2130 del = 46,652 after 13% tax. I came in $150 under that
I have some followups question if you don't mind...
did u pay cash? have a trade in? get honda canada financing as well?
It was cash yes no trade in. I guess clean transaction for the dealer but finance they may well get a kickback from - I don't know.
I sent an email to a bunch of dealers and laid out the exact spec (colour and max kms I would consider), I wanted to buy in next week, cash purchase, wanted best price as I didn't want to go back and forth and waste people's time, must be all costs included.
A real mixed bag of responses but I got there in the end.
If you have a trade in and it's finance or lease I don't see why the approach I took won't work for you.
Anymore questions, just ask!
