Door Edge Guard
Door Edge Guard
Anyone here has the door edge guard installed? Does it work well? I just got the car 2 weeks ago and there are already a few small chips / dings on the edge of my driver side door. I think someone must open their door too hard and bang against it. I am not sure if it is too late since there are already chips or the guard can actually cover the dings? Any thoughts or recommendation would be appreciated. Thansk.
I have it. I ordered it on eBay and put it on myself. Very easy install. Unless you are very close to it you cannot see it. I recommend it for protection. I don't know if it will do anything for the dings already there, but I am guessing it is better than having them exposed to the elements. If you decide to put it on, I would get some touch-up paint to ensure any exposed metal is covered before installation.
I had posted a picture for someone else in an older post if you want to see a close-up.

I bought my RDX at night and did not notice the paint chip on the driver's door edge until the next morning. I had them touch it up and put a door edge guard a week later after letting the paint cure some more.
now I don't worry too much if the door edge touches my other car in the garage and like mikejmack said, it is barely noticeable.

To properly install the door edge guard (or the rear bumper applique), it requires that you use "3MProtective Tape Solution", which costs about $46 for a quart. The door edge guard's usefulness is pretty limited, since it won't protect you from someone else's careless disregard for your property. So unless you regularly open and bang your own door into things, it's pretty much worthless.
The "Bumper Applique" is another story . If you tend to rest packages on your rear bumper when loading your car, this might prevent damage to the top of the bumper. I guess if the bumper extended beyond the bottom of the rear hatch door, they probably would have put a thicker (black)rubberized piece there, like is used on many SUV's and Minivans.

Seriously. Stuff like that really shouldn't be an upsell. I'm pretty careful with my car so I probably won't get too much need out of the door edge guards, but I suppose I'm glad they're there for the random occurrence where I bump the door and it hits a post or something.

The Sienna Limited I traded in had this film in ALL the important places and I never even thought about it before. I figured if it has ANY importance in "their mind", it should come on an expensive car.
I had the door edge guards put on today at the dealer, total cost was $182 for the guards and labor. It was a steep price I know, especially when I seen you can get them from Bernardi Acura for about $38 for the set. However, after looking at the installation instructions they just didnt seem like my cup of tea for a DIY. I also figured they might be a pain in the ass to install myself as I went along the contours of the door edges with a possibility of them developing air bubbles. I also didnt have the "3m sticker water solution" which is probably just soap, water, and adhesive mixed in (same thing the tint shops use probably)
I was at the dealer for a little over an hour. Rear doors look good, front driver door has one air bubble, and the front passenger door has about 4 air bubbles. The dealer is ordering front door replacements and will re-do free of charge.
So for the peace of mind and as far as the price I guess I can live with that. Im sure if I did it myself I would have had more air bubbles and would have probably ended up buying 2 or 3 sets (maybe more) to get the install done right.
At least I dont have to worry about that cause the dealer will replace and re-install for free. I also want to get the body side molding, but its recommended you install the door edge guards first before the body side molding. I figured let the dealer take accountability of the door edge guards because I think I can do the body side molding myself

But this is just ANOTHER example of something that should come on a car they want to classify as a "luxury brand".
The body side moldings is a good option and fairly easy to install. Just make sure the positioning is correct BEFORE you pull the tape backing off. It says you need a "Honda Roller"-lol , but I used a rubber Formica roller (like they sell in Home Depot) to roll it. But I probably didn't really need it.
