DIY Software Updates?
DIY Software Updates?
Is it possible to do module updates on your own at home? I purchased everything I needed to do this on my other vehicle, and the adapter I got is a J2534 passthrough device which says it compatible with HDS. Reading Honda's website on the software though, I can't tell if it would work or not. Their FAQ seems to contradict itself as one line says module programming can only be done with a J2534 device and another says that they don't work with Honda's software. Has anyone done this before and have insights? While we take our RDX to the dealer for most service, I doubt they have applied any updates (if there are any) while it was there.
I wish I had an answer for you, as I recently ran into this question myself when I was trying to update the transmission software. From my limited experience, I was under the impression that Honda has things locked down to the point where their software will only work with an iHDS device....but after reading the info in the link, I don't really know. I might have to ask the old man about this, he works at R&D and will know people that can answer this for sure. Was this the FAQ you were referencing? https://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/...I001_J2534.htm
I got the Cardaq-M and an Autel J2534 passthru. Both work with the Honda HDS and I have programmed many cars with these two passthru's. As long as it meets the J2534 standards, it should work. Keep in mind if the pass-thru is a cheap clone a a real unit be aware you may brick your module you are programming. Which brand and model is your pass-thru
Good Luck

It also says nothing about whether or not the factory's proprietary software has to work with those over-the-counter tools. They are free to develop other -- more sophisticated -- tools that their software can leverage in ways beyond what is necessary to satisfy regulators. If their "autorized service centers" all use that software and "special" tools, then they can still be compliant without extending those capabilities to the "non-special" tools available OTC.
For (not car-related) example, I have an electric wheelchair, here. Anyone can change its batteries. It will take you a fair bit of time -- especially if the batteries are dead. With special tools, I can cut down the time and effort required to do that (when you are paying for labor, if you can reduce the time required to perform an operation, you can reduce your cost or increase your profit). As the batteries can be changed with OTC tools, one can't complain that there is a better way to accomplish that with special tools!
I currently have a VCX Nano, and just bought a Mongoose-Plus, both for my Ford. According to Opus (Mongoose manufacturer), their Ford J2534 adapter isn't compatible with other brands. To me that doesn't make sense as it is supposed to be just a J2534 pass-through device. I may try it out some weekend I have free time to see if I can use it with iHDS.
