Collision Mitigation Braking System - Works Great

Let me preface this by saying my wife has been driving for over 25 years and has never had an accident.

We picked up our brand new 2017 Acura RDX on Saturday and went for a nice drive in our new vehicle. We were driving down the street in Vancouver and passed an alley on the right where 2 kids were throwing a football about 10 feet from the street. My wife looked to the right to make sure the football wasn't going to come flying into the street. Just as my wife looked to the right the car in front of her braked hard and we felt the car brake hard on it's own and the ABS system kicked in and we stopped 3 or 4 feet from the car in front of us.

My wife thinks she hit the brakes also after the car first braked on it's own but it happened so fast she wasn't sure. What we do know that without the collsion braking mitigation system our brand new RDX with less than 50 km on it would have been in a painful accident.

I never thought we would ever need the collision braking mitigation system, never mind needing it on the first day of ownership! Hats off to the Acura engineers and thanks to Acura Canada for having all the Acura Watch safety features standard on all RDX's sold in Canada

I had CMBS beat me by a fraction of a second when someone cut me off and hit the brakes. Just as I was about to slam the brakes, CMBS kicked in. beep beep beep, warning displayed on iMid and full on hard braking.

awesome!

Think of all the dough Acura is loosing in repair parts because of this technology. Bet they did not want to do that but had no choice.

My family had two minor fender/benders in my 06 TSX and 08 RDX that might have be avoided/lessen with CMBS. CMBS has kicked in several times on my 11 MDX and I think it prevented a third fender/bender. I think CMBS will become the next big tech to become standard for vehicles like airbags and anti-lock brakes.

yes, it was in the news few weeks ago that automatic braking will be standard by 2022.

I thought the RDX doesn't have the ability to completely stop.
I've experience the braking but never had the need for a full stop by the RDX or me.

Acura CMBS is not advertised as a full braking system like other brands. It is only "to help reduce the likelihood or severity of a frontal impact". I find CMBS helpful alerting the driver and giving you time to make a decision to brake, steer clear, prepare for impact, or just keep moving. I've had false alarm with the display flashing; but, it only applied the brakes/seat pre-tensioners when there was an actual object in-front of me. I will make sure my replacement vehicles for my TSX/RDX will have AWP on them (if I go with Acura again).

I thought that was the case, thanks.
I'd rather the system stop the RDX but the braking is a safety feature too.

short vs long

Does anyone know the difference between the short and long setting? Does short mean the system will activate less or more (shorter interval)?

Short and long setting is for the distance, not how active it is.
Here's a good video to explain CMBS.

Motor Week on PBS reviewed it this week (at least on my PBS station). They show it making a complete stop before a test barrier.

I saw that too but it doesn't completely stop.

I saw the same program also showing that. I think my CMBS doesn't engage under a certain mph on my 11 MDX (10-mph I guessing). Not sure about the 2nd gen CMBS min speed for it to work? I would be 100% happy with just the alert, apply brakes, and seat belt pre-tension. Far as I can tell, only handful of car manufacturers offer 100% crash avoidance system and only on certain models. This seems to be a hard nut to crack until all cars are self driving I think.

I don't know if it's still the case but 1,2 or 3 years ago,the best system was the EyeSight on a Subaru.
Though Subaru did a EyeSight option recall on some '15-'16 models.

Acura CMBS

"If the CMBS and computer sense a collision is inevitable, both the driver’s and front passenger’s seat belts are tightened firmly to brace for impact. The brakes are strongly, automatically applied to reduce collision speed and force. The computer is programmed to mitigate the effects of the collision, but you still have ultimate vehicle control. The car does not automatically swerve to avoid the collision, speed up to pass an obstacle, or come to a complete stop on its own."
