Smile Car Seat Installation Tips!

Hi guys,

I just bought an infant car seat and going to install on my RDX soon. Has anyone installed an infant car seat on your rdx? I would appreciate if you can share your experience, tips or recommendation with me.

Thanks,

yojcboy

Are you installing in a 2013 RDX?
If you are going to install it in the middle of the back, which is recommended to protect from side collision, you need to use the seat belts, there are no latches in the 2013 model in the middle. I strongly recommend you follow the car seat manual to your best ability and then get it inspected by the local police department/firehouse/hospital (whoever offers car seat inspections in your area). It's alot harder and takes more force to install than you probably can imagine and def need two people to do it.

I'm going to buy a pad for mine so the base doesn't scratch the seats...

I was also reading that you can put into the center with the latch as long as the base says it's ok and the latch reaches. I looked at the CX5 before buying the RDX and it said that if the latch connectors reach and the base says it's ok then it's Ok. CX-5 doesn't have latch anchors for center specifically either.

That said... I probably would put to one side of car just because it would be a pain in the arse to lift the seat and reach all the way to the center to lock in place (especially with a baby in it).

Yes, I am going to install the car seat on my 2013 RDX. Do I need to pull the seat belt from the top? I guess if I put the car seat in the middle of the back seat, then I am not able to fold down the back seat just in case if I need more trunk space.

Do you know which car seat protector will you get? I am looking for a good one to protect the seat to get scratches as well.

I bought a seat protector but wound up returning it. The car seat inspection people that helped me put it in said that you don't want anything between the car seat and the baby seat, it reduces the grip of the whole setup. You have to use the metal fastener that comes with the seat and lock down the overhead belt. Definitely look into getting it inspected by someone.

I bought the summer's eve duomat ($20 bucks).
I don't see how grip matters at all in the case of the base since it's attached very tightly at 2 anchor points. Also there is a very big difference in grip between alcantara, leather, and cloth seats and I don't think baby seats care what you throw them on. Besides the pad has higher "grip" than the smooth leather.

As for inspection... I haven't done it yet since baby is not due for another 2 months, but what is the purpose of it?
What if you get it inspected, and then decided to move it to the other side of car, do you have to get re-inspected?
What if you have 2 cars and 1 base, do you need to get re-inspected every time you switch cars?
What if you go on a trip and rent a car, do you have to take the rental to get inspected?

My baby is also due in two months. I am just preparing my shopping list and the car seat protector is one of the items on the list. I am from Canada. For my understanding, car seat inspection is not required by law but it is highly recommended for the child safety.

Inspection isn't mandatory but recommended since something like 80% of all car seats are installed incorrectly.

Mine is due in 2 months as well. I think I'm just going to install the car seat in the car for the hell of it.

I am also decideing to put the car seat in the center or at the side as well. I agree putting the car seat in the center will be inconvenient as well as making the back seats not able to fold down.

I am reading the RDX user manual from page 57 - 61. It looks like the instruction for the car seat is at the side instead of the middle. Does anyone know?

I tried installing in center with the LATCH anchors and it's very secure and stable, however it makes it near impossible to put on seatbelts for the two outboard passengers.

How did you do it? Have a pic? From what I understood, the latches are for either left or right side.

I don't have a pic, my latch anchors extend enough to be able to clip on both inner anchors. Because of the way the padding is set up for the center part (it's not a bowl) the base is actually more stable on the middle for me. Like I said however, you wouldn't be able to clip on the rear seatbelts because the belt for the LATCH goes over the top of the seatbelt anchors.

This is exactly what I thought too, I thought the anchor is for either left hand side seat or right hand side seat. Maybe different brand of car seat work differently? Having said that, what brand of car seat do you have?

The Mazda CX5 works the same way. It only has 4 latch anchors but it does say in the manual that if you want to put the seat in the center the latch clips have to be able to reach both center latch anchors.

I have a Peg Perego. There is no baby on board the seat now so I can move the base to the center and take pictures.

Really not much to it.
I sit on the base itself and just pull the belt to tighten it. It doesn't move much more than 1".

I have the Acura Neoprene seat covers and will be installing a baby seat over them.
I still have a few months however.

Thank you for sharing the picture. We don't need to use the shoulder seat belt from the ceiling, correct?

You could try using "seat belt extenders" here are two examples:
