I have a 2017 RDX on a lease that includes a service package for oil changes.

I took it in for my second oil change at 13,500 miles.

The service rep recommended I get the following items done:
Replace cabin air filter $60.16
Replace air filter $51.37
Estimated Total: $111.53

I told him that if new Acura models need air filters changed at 13k miles, that's a problem. He said that it depends on your driving conditions, like if I spent a lot of time driving in construction zones. This commuter car just goes back and forth to work on the freeway. We don't really have any air quality concerns here.I chalked it up as the dealership trying to get some money out of me since the oil changes are already covered.

A week later they sent a follow-up email telling me I needed to get the work done because they are "important to the ongoing performance and safety of your vehicle".

Does this sound right? I've never replaced an air filter prior to 30k.

 

They're trying to upsell you. Even if they were needed, you can do them both yourself in about 20 minutes for about $25 total.

 

while true; dusty commutes will dirty the engine air filter faster, you commute via freeway.
also, it takes a few minutes to physically check the engine air filter and it would be easy to check to see if the filter needs replacing by simply looking at it.

the constant mailing and badgering you, however, sounds like it's just an up sell.

physically inspect your engine air filter and determine if it's caked full of dust/dirt/bugs/rocks...if not, no need to change.
same thing with your cabin air filter.
Inspect it. if filthy, change it.

 

OK, will do! I have never changed either myself but I felt like I could buy the parts and do it for half the $111 quote, if it was actually needed. From what mark said, maybe even much cheaper than that.

I'll be shocked it it's as dirty as they claimed.

if the dealer did not inspect the filter, they have no clue how dirty it is....just up selling you.

I just replaced both filters for about $30 in parts. The maintenance minder flagged them for replacement at 24,800 miles. The engine air filter is hard to find for some reason. Walmart and O'Reilly didn't have it. Wound up getting it at Autozone.

 

Agreed with changing yourself. I would stick to OEM parts, only a little more expensive and worth the piece of mind. There are lots of online vendors (including Acura dealers who sell their items for pretty cheap). I purchased mine through my local dealer while they were completing the A1 service and did them as soon as I got home.

I figure they have a receipt in their system that I purchased the items from them.
