Transmission Whine

Transmission Whine
I was coming home from Vegas this weekend and noticed my tranny is making a whining noise. It's very similar to the geartrain noise you hear when you back up a manual car really fast. When I got home I drove it around town and noticed the whine is independant of RPM and is solely based on speed. As you go faster, the whine gets higher pitched and it seems to be the loudest between 30 - 50 MPH (must be a resonant frequency thing). My car has 62,000 miles on it so it's no longer under the original warrenty. Did the tranny extended warrenty only cover the transmission popping out of gear or is it for all tranny issues? Could this be related? I've been replacing the tranny fluid every 15,000 miles and will do so again tonight to see if it helps. Any advice or input from the forum would be greatly appreciated!

I had exactly the same noise you described, nothing else out of whack. I was kind of surprised when they told me that the bearings were shot and they replaced the transmission, it drove perfectly otherwise, except for the annoying noise.

It was strange for me because the whine first appeared after I had to accelerate really quickly with a cold engine to avoid getting rear ended by someone who switched lanes unexpectedly. I thought it was probably a vaccum hose or something blown lose and didnt' worry about it (but was annoyed by the sound) until I saw another post about the same whine. I think it was Zapata who told him it was his bearings so I took it right in. I had a new trans in less than a week (they only had my car for a day to install it...dropped off at 7:30am, picked it up at 5:30pm .no more noise.

That's the sound of an automatic on it's way out.
The warranty should cover you as well. It's just a matter of time before it packs up. If you pull the dipstick and the oil smells burnt, it's almost dead.

You Guys Are Right!
After seeing some of your posts, I decided to swing by Los Gatos Acura on the way home and talked to the service manager. After I described the problem he said it sounded like the bearings had gone and the tranny would be replaced under warrenty. He has another CL in their with the same issue!! I'm going to drop her off in the next few days and get the official determination. Thanks again guys!!!!!

mine started whining, a couple weeks later it slipped badly while taking off from a stop (felt like it was in neutral), about a month after that, I experienced the infamous "dropping into 2nd gear" while passing at 80 on the freeway. Luckily, there were no cars behind me.
The dealer had a new tranny installed within 4 days of dropping it off... He said it's not actually dropping into 2nd gear but is trying to shift into both 2nd and 3rd gear *at the same time* (since the bearings are shot)

I've been having these exact same whining problems. Here's my story -
A couple months back, transmission #1 w/ around 18k miles on it started to making a whining noise. Mostly audible in the first 3 gears from around 2k rpms to 3500. Just like you guys described, it changes frequency with the engine rpms.
Last month I took it to the dealer. Service guys checked it out, told me it was the transmission and replaced it. Waited a week, they called me back and told me that the replacement tranny that they installed was also whining ! So they spent the better part of that day checking to ensure it was actually the transmission making the noise and then ordered another one. I waited another week. Third transmission they said was all good so I came and got it and drove it home.
Not a couple hundred miles later I've noticed the whining again. It's come back gradually but now it is back to the point where it was as bad as the first transmission. I'm pretty pissed off but at this point I have no confidence that Acura has a clue as to what is really causing this noise. They are replacing transmissions and putting in "new" ones that are also supposedly making the same noise. WTF is that? The logical side of me wants to say that they are overlooking something that is masking itself as a transmission noise when it is actually coming from somewhere else along the drivetrain. I mean, here we have (in my case) 3 transmissions that are all making the same noise, of which two are new.
Now, I just don't want to take the car back to these guys for this problem. It's obvious that their first attempts didn't work and I was without my car for 2 weeks and stuck in this POS Ford Escort. The thing is that this transmission (and actually my original one) didn't have any noticeable problems aside from the noise. The shifting was absolutely fine. The whole thing is very frusterating and the noise drives me crazy but I just dont' know what to do at this point. I could let them just monkey with it some more and hope that I can get 3 failed repairs after the deal so that I can lemon law (in NH the lemon law is covered through the car's warranty period).
Acura NA needs to wake up. Not only are they replacing defective trannys but they're also putting in new ones that make noise. It ticks me off.

I had no whine the first orig. tranny, bit it had gone, and gone badly. Now the replacement tranny was fine, but this was the first time I had heard the whine, kinda like an airplane engine that increased with speed. once I hit about 60mph, it disapates and then road noice muffles it out. I haven't had any problems with the tranny even though I've had the whine for about 10k miles, go figure, I;m gonna wait until the tranny gives me a problem then bring her in.
