Same thing happened to me a 3 weeks ago. Not exactly a "fun" experience ... especially when you consider the people behind you have no idea why you are slowing down. We're both lucky we weren't rear-ended.

Considering you work at an Acura dealership i'm sure it was no problem getting this replaced.

Sorry to hear it went out on you though.

i had a tsx loaner, really slow, felt like a grandpa on the road, but after like two days in it i really started to enjoy the smooth ride and the lack of power that i'm used to in the cl, the mileage was insanely great compared to my 240miles on a full tank in my CL. Sorry bout ur tranny...

I'm on my third transmission now. Seems to be the best one yet.

I can't believe someone hasn't died because of this tranny issue. I know in Atlanta traffic, if my transmission died out I-75 in rush hour, my ass would cause a 20 car pile up. That's insane. I'm just hoping my doesn't go out like that and if it does, it goes out while I'm going a nice 35 or 40 with no one behind me. :-)

yeah but with the Acura you can almost predict that the tranny will fail.

Yes, I'm quite sure of that *and* some pretty good makers of cars do some pretty stupid stuff that eventually gets corrected. And, anything can "fail." IMO, it just depends on how often and why...

BMW used to put mild steel rockers on aluminum rockers on mild steel shafts in their 1600s and 2002s. They used to wear out in less than 10K miles if the engine did high revs. They continued with this stupid design for over 5-years. They knew there was a problem, but didn't fix it. The engine's oil pressure would go way down, the engine would fill up with aluminum crud, and the clatter from the rockers was horrible and they needed adjustments about every other month.

I ended up finding a couple of not-too-worn shafts, and had them hard chromed with oiling rings and chamfered holes. The rockers got bronze bushings. Tell me the engineers didn't know that aluminum rubbing on mild steel == bad mix.

The best part: one of the guys doing my shafts had parts being hard chromed for the local BMW importer. They drove the same cars, and got fed up with the same old crap. A year or two later the problem was fixed. The factory-supplied rockers had bronze bearings and shafts were made of harder steel.

So, maybe an Acura bigwig driving a CL/TL will have a "special" 5th-to-2nd-downshift experience, wet his pants, and contact the right people at the factory.

Hope for the best *and* plan for the worst.

BTW, one look at the diagrams for the current auto transmission should be enough "input" to determine that KISS (keep it simple stupid) is better than overcomplicated slushbox designs.

These are the facts:

1. Acura CL/CLS transmissions have a higher than normal failure rate.

2. Acura knows what the problem is (could be more than one problem).

3. Acura knows what it would take to fix it.

4. There are siginifcant failure rates but not enough to recall.

5. It is a cost vs. benefits issue. It's less expensive for them to extend the warranty and fix-as-needed rather than do a major re-design and voluntary replacement program.

Yes, it would be great if they would make the modifications/re-design that would correct the problem(s). The one thing that concerns me is the high-speed downshift possibilty that could cause a major accident. Fortunately, most of the failures are not at high speeds. Unfortunately, until a few major accidents happen, not much will be done.
