Trans #2 Bites the Dust
Well, at least I got about 20K miles out of the 2nd trans.... Problem started as a mechanical, rpm dependent whine that stayed consistent regardless of which gear the trans was in. Whine really noticeable at 5 - 15mph and again at 40 - 60mph. This noise gradually increases with speed until it's drowned out by road noise above 70mph.
I went for a drive with one of the mechanics at Acura 101 West, and they were able to locate the noise. The dealer replaced the half-shaft, and after testing found the whine was internal to the trans. They have ordered me one of the "new" ones built by the new company.
I'll let you know how it goes - should have the car back in a week or so.
For those of you not familiar with Acura 101 West's service department, they are truly first class. Speak with Erik Johnson or Max Fowler. These guys get it done - I've never had any issues, they take care of business the right way -

The dealer specifically told me that I'd be getting one of the new transmissions from Acura's new supplier. According to my service advisor, the new transmissions are built from better materials as well as from a QA perspective, so only miles will tell....

you are lucky , my second one crapped out after around 14K miles. The one they put in is a hell of a lot smoother than the first or second one, I am glad, hopefully it will last though .
I thought everyone was gettting refurbished trannies, maybe you did get lucky.

After reading about some of the trans. stories on-line, I went to local Acura dealer this morning. I was told that only about 1-2% of the CL's on the road will experience the problem. I was told that the defect was a poor part supplied by a vendor that they no longer use and it was not design.
I was told if the trans is going to go out on mine it will probably happen sooner than later.
I currently have 17,000miles on my 01 CL-S. I don't if the guy was blowing smoke up my ass, but he seemed somewhat genuine and didn't try to blow me off.
I will just have to wait and see..

My first replacement tranny felt solid at first too, but also crapped out. Now my third tranny feels solid too, but it's only been a couple days.

I got 18k out of my second one, I'm wondering if there's anyone in the group that's having a fourth tranny installed?

Trans #2 is in. They also replaced the ECU. Apparently, the new ECU fixes shift points in the trans; the only thing I noticed is that grade logic seems to be a bit more responsive. Other than that, it shifts crisply and....should remain that way I hope.
Keeping my fingers crossed - I'm tired of transmissions that grenade like this. I've never owned an auto trans. car that has had this much transmission trouble -
