Technical description of 5AT transmission behavior?

What is our transmission doing (maybe only in 5th gear) when it shifts into what *feels* like a lower gear upon accelerating but actually stays in 5th? I think it was said that Acura is doing something to increase gas mileage.

I've searched for 10 minutes and can't find the answer (though I know I've read it on here before).

Thanks,
Nutz

that's the torque converter unlocking. It locks up when you are cruising to decrease the rpms and increase gas mileage. But when you need to accelerate adn you give it more gas, it "un-locks" which raises your rpms giving you more power to go, yit also takes some stress opf the engine.
