Speedo needle jumps... warning lights on!

Had a wierd problem today... was driving on the freeway at about 70MPH and all of a sudden the speedo needle dropped to zero. I thought I imagined it because it popped right back up. Then in happened again, and stayed down at zero.

Next a whole bunch of warning lights came on... engine, VSA, ABS and the car started to power down... just like the vsa kicking in when you lose traction on hard acceleration. When I pulled over to the side the gearshift was jammed and would not let me shift to park... it would not move past the neutral spot. I shut the car off and restarted and all lights dissapeared EXCEPT the engine light.

My first reaction was WTF... never had anthing like this happen on my Accord. I drove right to the dealer and they are checking it out. The first diagnostic said that it was a speed sensor problem.

Does this make sense? Is this an early signal of transmission trouble?

Has anyone had this kind of problem?

Any help greatly appreciated!

i was thinking transmition speed sensor before i read about the first diognostic, not really a early sign of a crapping tranny tho to the best of my knowledge.. those speed sensors are expensive for a lot of cars

Hmm, dealer should still check out the tranny.

I had something simialr happen on a friend's car. All it ended up being was a short in one of the wires that was causing the speed sensor to go haywire, just difficult to find.

Shouldn't have anything to do with the tranny though

Fried Tranny

Hi guys... just wanted to let you know that I got confirmation from the dealer today that it is indeed the tranny. Second gear is fried.... apparently they have six levels of "degradation" and mine was at the worst after 60K miles of mostly highway driving.

There was no problem regarding warranty replacement. I asked if they were going to replace the weak transmission with another weak one and they assured me that the new transmissions have a recall upgrade in them. Is this just BS?

So for the next while my wheels are a lovely EL.

I must say that even though I have read about lots of transmission woes, I bought the Acura BS of it being only 2% transmissions affected, and thought that it would never happen to me. This has really shaken my confidence in Acura... I think it unlikely that I would buy another one.

Happy New Year!

The loaner they gave me was an EL... quite a step down from the CLS... although the transmission seems to work

Maybe I am just a little pissed right now, well dissapointed actually, but it is probably better for it to go now rather than when i am close to the extended warranty.

The canadian counterpart to our Civic Ex sedan. Although I think it is a little nicer with leather and maybe some other amenities.

Thanks PSD112... I didn't realize that the EL was a Canadian only item. You are right it is basically a luxury version of the Civic... which may be OK if you haven't driven a CL, but a little dissapointing if you have.
