My car downshifts too soon....

OK, now when I'm braking and coming to a stop, when I get down to about 10 or 15 mph the car seems to downshift (into 1st) early so the car jerks a little bit. What is causing this jerk? Please tell me it's not my tranny wanting to go out?

Funny thing is, I have a beater that's been doing this for 5 years. Not sure what the cause is, but it's still running.

Anyway, any help??

There are a ton of factors as to why the car would be downshifting at that speed. RPM, the grade of the road, etc. all play a factor as to when the car downshifts. This should not be a cause for alarm. If your tranny starts slipping, then you should get nervous.... but without knowing all of the facts, I'd say that it seems pretty normal.

It's especially weird that it's been doing it on my other car for 5 years now.

maybe I'll just let it keep doing it
