GRRRRRRRRR! Tranny failure!
So I'm driving home on the NYS Thruway doing about 65 in a line of traffic when my car decides to go from 5th gear to 2nd w/ no input by me! Even tho I was belted I thought I was going thru the windshield since the nose of the car went straight down. For whatever reason, it shifted back into 5th right away and I drove it home. Called the dealer, it's going in tomorrow. He said it was the 3rd tranny he's ordered--TODAY!
Here's the website you should file a complaint with NHTSA so they have proper numbers to evaluate
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/
Looking on the bright side (as I'm prone to do) I'm gettin' a brand new spankin' tranny when the car's got 64K on the odometer! One less thing to worry about right?!

Glad to hear that at least you are okay. I keep on reading bad stories about how people are avoiding accidents because of the Tranny.
Anyways.. Welcome to the club, I just took my car in yesterday to get mine replaced. Luckily mine started hinting around that it was going to fail slipping between 2nd and 3rd gear while I accelerated, so before it got worse I took it in and the dealer confirmed that it was slipping.
Glad to hear though that you are getting a new tranny with 64K, like you say one less thing to worry about.

This is beginning to make me nervous now. A tranny having a problem shifting from 2nd to 3rd is tolorable, but when they start having problems while in 5th at highway speeds we have a safety issue. I sure hope that someone is doing something about this. I'm afraid to lend my car to my daughter (who may have one of her daughters with her). YMMV

Thanks for the sentiments guys, but like I said and this is very important, FILE A COMPLAINT W/ NHTSA. I made it easy for everyone. That is why they are saying 1-2% failure rate, they don't have all the numbers. Really strange, this morning before this all occurred I walked out of a pretrial w/ a state supreme court judge in Buffalo. I run smack into (literally) an atty I litigated a claim involving a NHTSA Defect Investigation 2.5 years ago. His claim was (defending GMC) that b/c the rate of occurrence was so low on a part that was killing people (flex fan) that was determinative on the issue of its safety (read, it was safe). BULLSHIT! That's not the way it works and the judge agreed w/ me. I shlda taken running into this guy as a premonition. Fawk.

I've got a feeling that the failure rate among CL-S/TL-S's is much, much higher.
Edit: Chief - Sorry, glad you're ok.

My 1999 Accord's tranny went bad this past summer. But Honda did replace it for free, though it was out of warranty AND clearly modified with boltons.

They told me that the tranny I got now is an updated tranny, but it seemed like the guy just made this up to make me somehow feel better. I told him I'd see him again in about 15K miles when my fourth tranny should be due.

The "problem" may have been first recognized by Acura this summer is the more proper way to explain it. How many of you guys have had multiple replacements?

The CL-S engines generate peak torque pretty low in the rpm range which, IMHO, is the reason why even the folks who claim they don't redline much have failed trannies. Of course, it could also be due to high heat levels or something else, but who knows?
I doubt the mechanics at your local Acura dealer who replace your tranny get to crack open the dead tranny to see what failed, so any tech who tells you he knows why they are failing is probably just full of it.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Just be nice about it.

Yeah I'm worried about the tranny too. Glad to hear you're ok Chief. Did you know your tranny was about to go, did it just go out on you suddenly?
Because I know mine is about to die. It's been dying a slow death for the better half of 2002. After reading the safety aspect of it all, I want to go in and get a replacement but I'd rather do this if someone knows if there is a newer tranny design in place.
If I don't get something by this Summer, you will be reading my post about my tranny going out without warning....I hope I survive it.
67k miles.

Ken, I had a strange feeling this was coming on b/c the car started acting weird about 1 1/2 weeks ago (New Year's Eve as a matter of fact). Took my niece skiing and when I brought her home, put the car in reverse, took foot off brake, stepped on gas, car did nothing. As revs dropped, the car made a clunking noise and went backwards. Did it again when I got home and backed into the driveway. Haven't driven it since then b/c the weather's been crappy and I've been using my Jeep instead. First day to use it again was yesterday when it performed its magical shifting routine.
BTW-thanks CL-er's for the kind thoughts on my well-being, I appreciate it!
