Gear slippage in third

As the subject states, when I immediately shifted into 3rd gear (SS mode), the RPM's jumped up to 4K, then the tranny caught. I am having it looked at tommorow since this is the second time in two days this has occured. Also, the whining noise that is common among members is becoming more audible.

Say goodbye to the current tranny...

Get that thing into the shop, once the clutch packs scatter all of their material into the lines, you're on your way to "spontaneous downshift city."

Bummer....

Well, hopefully it doesn't try to downshift sponateously on the E-way while I drive it to the dealership. I can always sense the grade logic trying to figure out which gear is most efficient on long, gradual upslopes. The car has been doing this for almost 20K, but I tried to ride it out as long as I could. You know, I've been busy with my degree.

Yep, I get it...

If it's an original tranny, and doesn't have all of the updates to correct the clutch material grenade the strainer issue, you can have a very nasty surprise.

Just keep big things away from your bumper and keep the speed down. If you do happen to do a 5-2 downshift, at least you won't be doing 70- to 80-MPH at the time.

You don't get any warning ... really, it just feels like a "lock-up" and it’s pretty brutal.

The folks at the NHTSA were pretty clear about the "peril" issues were related to dealer's not taking quick action -- and drivers not getting the cars in once the clutches started to flare...

I gotta tell you, from firsthand experience, that 5-2 downshift certainly gets your attention at 65-70 mph. Especially nice the "chirp" the front tires make as they lock up momentarily and you think about what might have been if you were on an overpass high in the air ...

Get this guys...

On the way to the dealership to drop off the car, I did not experience an error code. (Flashing D5 light or check engine light). There were 3 accidents on the expressway and traffic was gridlocked on I-96 in Metro Detroit area. The stop and go traffic continued for 30 minutes and when it started to free-up, my tranny couldn't engage during upshifting. It also tried to severly downshift around 60 mph!! By this time I was sweating bullets as I was in bumper to bumper traffic in rush hour and people were driving aggressively not to mention people were tailgating and weaving like crazy. Mad fawking Michigan drivers!!

I don't understand because my car seemed to cruise fine for a while, but then when I came to a stop, the upshift was very unsmooth. I only experience one "attempted" downshift from 5th gear on the highway.

I finally made it to the dealership and they gave me a POS Chrysler Sebring that also had a weak tranny! Ahh man, wtf is with my luck?

When you get the early warning signs, you need to get the car in ASAP. I don't need to tell you this now.

And, yes, your experience has been repeated again and again. You’re lucky you actually made it to the dealer. A few others have NOT been so lucky.

Once the clutch material "scatters", the tranny has the equivalent of "dementia" and congestive heart failure; it's going to be bad, if you don't seek immediate treatment.

linto,

Definitely get it checked out. I had similar symptoms and I called PAA right away. Between the time I called them and my service appointment it only got flakier... (Even reverse was hosed near the end...) Luckily it held out just long enough and I was able to drive it in.

With only 24k miles on the CL-S and three months to go, I figured I would make it through my entire lease with the original tranny.

Welp, I got a new tranny, ecu and that second gear oil jet kit. That should hold me over for the summer.

Edit: Whoops, just read you took it in. I think we were both lucky to get it in the shop before the dreaded high speed second gear downshift.

[QUOTE=IntegraVT]linto,

So did you have to ask for the second gear oil jet kit in addition to the new transmission they installed, or is this part of the repair quote.

Thanks.

I think the newly ordered replacement trannies are bundled with the oil jet kit.

It probably wouldn't hurt to casually mention the recall campaign. I'm sure every Honda/Acura service department is bracing for the flood of calls when the letters finally get mailed out.

Yes, I'd also mention the recall to see what they say. But from what I understood, the oil jet kit is only added to the trannies that don't show any damage to second gear under the recall, if your tranny is replaced with a new/rebuilt tranny due to damage to second gear some other type of fix is used on the updated tranny.

This is from EricL's thread with the Acura Owners' Link Info.
Why is the dealer repair different from the manufacturing repair?
The manufacturing change was relatively easy to accomplish during transmission production, but to apply the same repair at the dealership would require transmission removal and disassembly. Installation of the oil kit is a permanent repair that is easily accomplished at the dealership.
I wonder what the "manufacturing change" is?
