Car overheated -- WHY?

So last night I'm driving home and all of a sudden it starts to redline. I stepped on the gas and the needle would jump but the car wouldn't go, just like if it was in neutral.

Anybody have any suggestions on what it could be? Radiator, coolant, thermostat?

Little more info please.

What was redlined? Tach? Water temp? Did you just suddenly lose power? Other symptoms?

Also, assuming it just wouldn't go and the engine reved just fine...that's suspiciously like your auto tranny. Had a problem there before?

The tachometer started redlining. It was like I was driving and everything was fine. Then all of a sudden the tachometer needle started to redline and my engine started getting really loud. I hit the gas but the car wasn't responding, only the tach needle would jump.

I pulled over. Sat there for about 10 minutes, started the car and it was fine for another couple miles before it started doing the same thing again. At that point I just had AAA come get me.

If my tranny was dead, would the car start driving again after I let it sit for a few minutes?

After the first time, I pulled over and turned it off for about 10 minutes. Got back on the road for about 3 miles before it started doing it again.

That would 100% be the tranny. Time to take it in for the replacement.

Okay, so if I get the tranny replaced, would the car go back to its old self or is this something that'll change the performance of the car forever?

I love my car so I don't want to sell it if I don't have to.

No offense, but do you even know what a transmission is and what it does. Although it sounds like you don't know much about cars, you should know that it's not good on the engine to hold it at redline in neutral...which is in essence, what you were doing. They will replace the transmission, or do whatever repairs to that they do in these instances, and assuming you didn't do any damage to the engine, reving it to redline repeatedly, your performance should be the same.

I never said I redlined it in neutral. I know better then that man, ha. I said that it redlined while I was driving it, and it felt like the car was in neutral because the car wasn't responding.

most likely car redlined when transmission failed and defaulted to 2nd gear. That would result in engine hiotting reline at 70mph hwy speeds

Maybe I didn't type what happened clearly, but I don't think I have anything to hide from them. I was driving home, my car messed up, I pulled over, got towed, and that's it.

Should be 1-2 days after they get the part. I got a loaner car. I got an RDX. I was hoping to get a TL so I could have an extended test drive.

I think you're lucky to get an RDX.

I think it's funny that you associate overheating with redlining.

Both times that I had my transmission replaced, Acura gave me a rental since they didn't have any loaners and both times it only took them two days to replace it. If they have the tranny stocked like my dealership did, they won't take long.

If this is the first time the tranny was replaced in your car, they will also replace the PCM and P/R. This update will change the shift patterns in your car. Other than that, it will still be the same.

The PCM controls the electronics in the transmission and I assume P/R is for Program and Reflash

Make them give you a rental. It is Acura's policy that if they don't have available loaners, that they company (Acura) will cover three days of rental free of charge to you (not including whatever insurances you take with the rental company). If they didn't offer, then you need to learn how to make a statement my friend...

i call and told them i need a car for work and school. they said there out of loaner car and they offer me the phone number to enterprise . they told me it cost 36buck a day. i took it in this Wednesday's and it wont be really till Monday evening or Tuesday morning. i cant complain, i'm still getting a free tranny. what do you i just want to test out the new TL as a loaner.

Mang... Acura pays for three days of rentals while doing service covered under warranty. You are getting screwed. I would bring this up with the general manager if hte shop manager doesn't fixi it for you
