5th Generation Tranny

Just a quick question about the 5th generation tranny for automatics. Has anyone out there had the 5th generation tranny installed. If you have, has it been reliable? Do you notice any degradation in the performance of the car?

Steve,

Your right, about there been only 3 generations of CL/TL's, the term 5th generation tranny is kinda misleading. The way it was explained to me was the transmission is the 5th version, or the 5th revision, since the CL/TL tranny problem begun.

Its the same transmission that was installed last 2003 CL/TLs to be built. Hence why later 2003 models don't come with an extended transmission warranty.

The reason why they dont ask you if you want a "5th generation" tranny installed is because i would believe it costs more money for the Dealer/Acura, which is why they just install a rebuilt trannys, cheaper for them and they hoping it lasts you to 100K which gets them of the hook after that.

The reason why i had one installed was because of the series of problems before, and then my transmission failed. I was assured that the tranmission would not fail again and after a few talks with the GM thats when i found out they had in fact installed a New tranny, not a rebuilt. Also i noticed that they don't install a oil jet kit with a 5th GEN tranny.

"has it been reliable?" IMO yes with 30000miles on it so far no problems.

"Do you notice any degradation in the performance of the car?"

Again for me i noticed better performance and feels alot smoother when in SS. and indirectly i apprear to get better MPG.

Thanks for your input. I hate to say it but I'm looking forward to my Tranny failing also. I'll fight the Dealership until they give me a new one. I'll even pay a little extra if I have to but I shouldn't have to with my extended coverage. Its still a joy to drive my car dispite the potential problem. .

I know I have a rebuilt one becasue the the color blue on the bolts. That sucks man. I have 89,000 miles on my car. I hope if the tranny gives it goes soon before the 100,000. I getting hard shifts again. I thinking of getting something else. Maybe a BMW 4 series thats coming out.

Did you still get the "band-aid" fix applied to the tranny? And:

1. Did they change your PCM?
2. Did they remove and/or add the oil-squirter "band-aid" fix to your NEW tranny? (Or did they remove it -- if it had previously been installed?)
3. Are you running an additional (B&M/Comptech or other front-mounted ATF cooler.)
4. # of miles on your current 5th gen transmission.
5. Current total mileage as of today.

Interesting to note that Consumer Reports shows a much better owner survey response for the 2003 CL Type-S slushbox. (The transmission would presumably include manuals as well -- so I would not be willing to draw a firm conclusion; I’m only pointing out information they provided in their magazine.)

In the past, others have indicated that they finally received a solid tranny when they got the "later model" tranny as opposed to the "rebuilds."

Acura issued recalls for third gen TLs (2004+): The "band-aid" fix (2nd gear squirter). I believe that there is an additional mod -- or mods -- to the shaft and other parts to correct the 2nd gear lubing issue in subsequent trannies.

Perhaps the tranny is a "5th gen" with 2nd gear fixes -- or a 5.x gen tranny.

Nice to have the band-aid removed -- hey?

Your story seems to align nicely with a couple of others.

Thanks for the info...

Third Gen TL recall info:

2004 Acura TL NHTSA Recall ID Number: 04V176000
Recall Date: APR 15, 2004
Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Potential Units Affected: 1099796
Summary: ON SOME MINI VANS, SPORT UTILITY AND PASSENGER VEHICLES, CERTAIN OPERATING CONDITIONS CAN RESULT IN HEAT BUILD-UP BETWEEN THE COUNTERSHAFT AND SECONDARY SHAFT SECOND GEARS IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, EVENTUALLY LEADING TO GEAR TOOTH CHIPPING OR GEAR BREAKAGE.
Consequence: GEAR FAILURE COULD RESULT IN TRANSMISSION LOCKUP, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
Remedy: ON VEHICLES WITH 15,000 MILES OR LESS, THE DEALER WILL UPDATE THE TRANSMISSION WITH A SIMPLE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE TO INCREASE LUBRICATION TO THE SECOND GEAR. ON VEHICLES WITH MORE THAN 15,000 MILES, THE DEALER WILL INSPECT THE TRANSMISSION TO IDENTIFY GEARS THAT HAVE ALREADY EXPERIENCED DISCOLORATION DUE TO OVERHEATING. IF DISCOLORATION EXISTS, THE TRANSMISSION WILL BE REPLACED IF DISCOLORATION IS NOT PRESENT, THE DEALER WILL PERFORM THE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 21, 2004, FOR PILOT, ODYSSEY, AND MDX OWNERS. OWNERS OF THE ACCORD VEHICLES WILL START RECEIVING LETTERS ON JUNE 28, 2004, AND ON JUNE 29, 2004, FOR OWNERS OF THE TL AND CL VEHICLES. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009 OR ACURA AT 1-800-382-2238.

I have a later model 03 CL-p, and as for the tranny recall, when I went to the Acura dealership, they said there was the oil-jet recall on it and so i got the oil jet (when my car was at 20k miles)

my question is.
1. if the "5th gen" tranny is supposedly fixed and the 2nd gear problem is fixed, why was there a need for my car to get the oil jet recall?

Because from my understanding, the later model 03 CL did not get the warranty extension, and my warranty was only 50k miles with no extension
