Wheel is shaking not only braking!

Okay for a while my steering wheel shakes and I've just let it be. Figured it was balancing or something. I got new tires yesterday and balanced with the top of the line Hunter Roadforce machine. The guy said there were no complications. At higher speeds 55+ it seems that the steering wheel shakes more then it should, when I break at those speeds it shakes basically around the same amoutn maybe a little more.

I have not gotten an aligment yet but I doubt that makes a difference.

At about 15k miles I got my rotors resurfaced from the TSB. Do you think its the rotors again...and if so do you think I could get them to do it under warranty with 43k miles?

It could be rotors, it could be something bent but honestly, I'd get the alignment done just to say you've tried that too. You never know.

Wheel???

Could be your rotors but...

could also be a bent wheel. I had the same issue. I thought it was my rotors warping again and nope...apparently I did bend a rim. No matter how much you balance a bent wheel, it may test out ok on the machine, but if it's bent, it's bent...

yeah that's the alignment. I've had that problem and just get your alignment fixed and it should go away.

Can't be a bent wheel, the hunter balancer tests for that. It's likely the rotors. Warped rotors can cause that. There's too much run out on the rotor & it rubs the brake pads causing the steering wheel to shake. I doubt a dealer will do anything for free.

I thought mis-alignment causes the car to pull either left or right?

does it happen more when you're accelearting? shaking in the wheel can also occur if your axle's are damaged. but it sounds more like an alignment issue.

and to answer Time for Sleep's comment, alignment isn't just about pulling the car right and left.

When it comes to alignment there is Toe, Camber and Caster. All affect tire wear, and maneveurability differently.

Enjoy:

^^^^^^^^It does.

Sounds like he brakes too hard. Going from 110 to 15 on OFF ramps are we?

It's alright. I'm guilty too. I got my rotors turned 6500 miles ago. I'll need new rotors next and probably within 6000 more miles (LoL). I'm going slotted or cross drilled. Which ever is cheaper.

Especially if they've been turned once before. Less material makes them easier to warp.

Id say rotors are warped. if they have been cut before, get the rotora slotted and new pads.

I have talked to several people about warping rotors now. A few of them have picked up cheap, a/m rotors and have had better experience with those than the OEM's, go figure.

I still say get the alignment done before doing anything else.

oh i forgot to mention it could be improperly balanced tires. that has a big part to play in that too.

Get it aligned and go from there...

If there is something bent, broken, or whatever, it should be apparent when they align it...

Don't be fooled though. I do believe that it's the best machine out there but I've also ran into a few guys that didn't know how to use it. They didn't know how to hide weights and didn't know what the roadforce measurements meant.

alignment will only cause the car to pull on one side or be unstable, but will never cause shaking.

a bad alignment could wear your tires not evenly and cause shaking because the tires is like fish scales, since you say your tires are new it's not the cause here.

since you just got them balanced, go back and see them, they should not charge you because it's freshly balanced and not OK.

it could be the wheel mounting on the machine, it could be some weights that unglued, it could be the tires, it could be your wheels.

we also use that $23 000 balancing machine that Honda/Acura forced all its dealers to buy, but in very rare cases, it lead us wrong.
