I'm thinking about getting 18" rims w/ 235/50/18 pilot sports. Are those tires too big? Will it rub against anything? I've read in a post that the max tire width is 225 without rubbing. Is that true?

I have the same question. I'll be getting a CL-S next week. Will these:
5Zigen Wheels, size: 5Zr wheels 17x7.5
work on our Car ?

Thanks

Hey rod, the problem is that I use to have 225/45/18 (before they were stolen)on my car and I had alot flats because of the NY roads. There are just way too many pot holes on the roads and I don't want to take any chances again. And since the roads are that bad, do you or anyone else think I should get 17" rims even though that's pointless. Right now I have my stock rims on and I could go over minor pot holes with no problems, thats how I came up with the 235/50. But will that rub? probably would.

I don't know b/c Im still on stock wheels and tires, but have seen that 235/40/18 is the widest people have gone with no problems. It also depends on how your car is dropped, if at all. I saw one person say that they have a very minor clearance problem on one side with 235/40/18s and the Comptech springs, but I don't remember who. To be safe you could go with 17s, but I don't really think it's worth the money if you're going for looks. But if performance is what you're going for, then go with a lightweight 17". It's just personal preference. If I decide to waste money on wheels, I'll be doing it for looks, but don't want to hurt performance much either. I'm even contemplating 19s if I decide to waste the money, but the whole super-low profile tire/bent rim situation's making me really think about it.

1. If you thinking about going with 18" wheels, the tires with the best rolling radius match are: 235/40-18 and 225/40-18.

2. Don't even think about the 235/50-18s -- that size is way off...

If you stick with 235/45-17 or 235/40-18 you shouldn't rub IF you don't lower the car. Members on the board also run 225/45-17 and 225/40-18.

If you are going to lower the car, you might get some rubbing with the 235s on wider wheels. (The wheels and tires contribute to the rubbing.)

For example a 8" wide rim with a 235 will rub a bit when dropped a little and rub badly with some nasty lowering.

Will 225/45/17 fit on my stock rims?

I don't really have the money or the desire to change the stock rims, even though they are extremely heavy. I just want some better tires.

Thanks all!

EricL:

I have gotten (but not yet installed) 17x8 rims and 235/45-17 tires.

Although I am only considering lowering, I still AM considering. Would you please quantify 'dropped a little' versus 'some nasty lowering?'

If I go ahead with it, it will most likely be the Comptech springs that will be utilized.

Your thoughts?

Thanks,
Pete

The size is fine. I'm running the same size BBS RX rims. The offset and bolt pattern should be your only concern with that size. I think the 5Zigen supply a +48 offset (stock +55) and a 5 x 114.3 bolt pattern. Just right for the S.

I consider lowering to be something in the 1-1.5" range. My 235s on the SSRs work fine and never rub -- I check from time-to-time just to be sure.

I wont mention their name, but someone here had the same setup (but with Comptech lowering springs), Toyo T1S Proxies in 235/45-17 with the SSR Comp wheels in 17x8" +48 offset.

When I first asked them, they said, "Nope, there is no rubbing."

Then about a week later, a much grumpier reply came about there being a little rubbing in the front.

He also says that I would hate the springs...

Funny, I had a ride the other day with a car with the "springs" and thought is was ok...

I also have communicated with another member who claims to have seen plenty of rub marks on "lowered" cars with wide wheels and 235 tires (17" and 18" wheels). Sorry, I can give you the tire makes, wheel widths, and offsets.

So, if you plan on using the Comptech springs (or equivalents), you will get "some" rub.

With that being the case, and from looking at the track on my tires and wheels, I would want to roll the fenders and have a pro work the wheel wells over before I dropped 2" or more.

(All of this is just my opinions, but I don't think people have been forthcoming with rubbing problems -- that's all I know)
