Question about wheels for winter
Question about wheels for winter
I'm thinking about getting a different set of wheels + tires for my winter driving. I'm not very familiar with this area, so if someone could enlighten me, I'd appreciate it.
First off, why do people recommend going to a 16" rim instead of 17" like what is stock on the CLS? Granted, I understand getting beater rims for the winter just so if they get trashed, you don't care... plus it's a lot easier to remount your summer tires after the winter season if you have different sets of rims+tires. What I'm curious about is if there is a particular reason to go with 1" less for winter setups.
Secondly, I'm looking at 3 different options for getting my rims. I found a set of 16" TL rims for $375. Is that a good or bad deal? I could go with a cheap "winter package" that tire rack sells... I think I can get 4 blizzaks plus 4 cheap rims for like $750. My third option is a coworker of mine who is selling his stock rims from his '00 Prelude SH. He's looking to get $300 for them, but I wasn't sure if that was a good price or if they'd work.... I've heard of problems using 17" CLS rims on a stock CL, so I wasn't sure if there'd be problems using stock 16" prelude rims on an '03 CLS. LIke I said, I really don't know much about wheels.

When I had our '00 Mustang (17"rims), I went to the tire store, bought a set of 15" Eagle Alloy rims (not bad, but cheap), with the best winter rubber, and installed for both was $950!
15" tires are 1/2 the price of 17" ones.
id stick with factory wheels, rather than aftermarket wheels for the winter.
the 97+ prelude wheels will fit. in addition to what 'wires' said, people use a 16inch wheel because youll be able to get a tire with a bigger sidewall (60 vs 50 series), which gives you better snow traction (supposedly)
i use steel wheels for my tl (from the odyssey - $60 each). id go for those prelude wheels. the 5 spokers are pretty clean
