Lightest Tires
anyone know what the lightest tires you can buy are?
supposedly SO'3's are the heaviest..and Pirelli 7000 are the lightest..
but the 7000 i think are discontinued now, and their wear/comfort is not that great according to ratings on tirerack.com

ok did some research, toyo t-s are pretty light too
in 235/40/18 the T-1s is 22.9 pounds, thats 4 pounds lighter than SO3's..
damn what a difference, and i think i read somewhere that weight in tires are more important than weight in rims..
so why doesnt everyone make a big deal about tires being heavy?
anyways, i answered my own question..thanks..FOR NOTHING.

I guess it all depends. Because of the rotational inertia, if I had to have 4 extra pounds some where, it would be preferred to have it in the rims than within the tires (i.e. if I have to have more weight, I'd rather have it as close to the center of the circle/wheel as possible). The further the weight is distributed away from the center of the circle/wheel, the more difficult it is to get that wheel spinning.

I didn't realize the S-03s were some of the heaviest tires. That sucks. Other than weight, they are damn fine tires for stickiness. Maybe I'll go with Toyo T1-S next time. Hopefully, they aren't as heavy as S-03s and I know many, many CLers say that they are sticky as hell too.

In a sense, it is rocket science. :P
BTW - I went with the Toyo T1-S for that reason, and the 18lbs Konigs.
I've roughly estimated my 0-60 times to be 4-5 tenths better now. A combination of better traction and lighter weight tires and wheels.

Lack of interest... I'm still waiting for someone to saw some tires apart to get the weight of the tread vs. the sidewalls...
Hey, a 225/45-17 is lighter than a 235/45-17 too, but a 245/40-17 is lighter than a 235/45-17 (with the T1S). The size matters too...

The stories and weights vary. But, one report had the MXM4/OEM tires @ 26lbs and the OEM wheels at 26lbs for a total of 52lbs. A set of light wheels and tires makes quite a difference...
