Get 4 new tires or replace one?
Hi all,
I've got a bubble in one of my tires. I noticed it about a little while ago. Now my car is at Acura and they did a tire rotation and they also noticed it. They told me it would cost $233 to replace that one tire.
My car has 36,500 miles on it --- all on the original, stock tires.
I told Acura not to replace that tire for $233. If anything, I can go buy the same tire for much less somewhere else. But my question is whether I should spend the money to replace the one tire or if I should get four new tires?
How long are our stock tires supposed to last?
And, if I replace with four new tires, what do you recommend? I'm moving to Seattle, WA at the end of November, so I'll definitely need all-season tires.
I was looking on tirerack.com under the best sellers for our car (stock size) and they have the Sumitomo HTR+ (Ultra High Performance All-Season) for $74 each. They also have the Yokohama AVS ES100 (Ultra High Performance All-Season) for $109 each.
Thanks for your help!!

I got 61,000 miles on my OEM tires. If you have a lot of tread left on the other three, I would opt for one tire and keep it on the back, until the other three wear out. YMMV

Stock is $173 at Tire Rack so add mount and balance and you are at $185-190. Even Sumi's are near $400 mounted and balanced. I agree with Co-CL-S, depends on what the others look like. I'm at 57k on stock and am looking towards AVS-ES100's and hoping to get 35k out of them.

I won't bother with the OEM tires. I had 2 bubble on my '01 CLS and another one bubble on my '03 CLS 6sp. I changed to Michelin Pilot Sports A/Ss. Their side wall construction is much more durable than the OEM tires and provide much better handling.

I replaced two of the stock tires before buying new ones and regret ever doing so.
Buy a nice set of Z-rated tires and save yourself some hassle as they will handle and grab twice as good as the stocks and they won't bubble as easily having a stiffer side wall.

Thanks for all the replies so far.
I was on tirerack.com looking at tires that are the same size as the stock tires...and decided to compare their four best sellers. The Continental's look like they are slightly better overall than the Yoko's?
Also, do you recommend keeping the same width tire on the car or changing it? I don't drive very aggressively.
TireRack comparison of four tires
Thanks,

Well, SOB! I thought I didn't see any session ID in the URL but apparently there is. That link is useless.
Anyway, if you go to tirerack.com and select 2001 Acura CL-S and click "View Best Sellers" - the top four are Yoko ES100, Continental, Sumitomo HTR+ and Yoko Avid V4. (The V4 is out of the question).
Do these Yoko ES100's handle well in the snow?

Go with the Contiextreme Contacts, I got them, handles bettter then the OEM's, I paid $440 total for all four mounted, Balanced, etc...save your self some bucks and dont get the OEM's, The Contis look good, "Z"rated All-Season, rim protector bar, good in the wet, espically if you are going to Seattle were it rains alot...

Whatever you do, don't let the dealer replace your tire. They will overcharge you big time for it!
You have over 30K miles on stock tires. The stock tires suck! I'd get 4 new peformance tires now. They will be a chuck of $$ but will help your car ride better, perform better, & give you longer tread life.

Outnumbered at home
had the exact same thing happen at 33k miles. Decided to get all new ones rather than try and squeez a few more miles out of the 3. Went with the Sumitomo and bought and installed them for under 350 so for an extra 150 you will have 4 new tires that won't freaking bubble. That is one thing to be worried about. If another wheel bubbles you are shit out of luck because you will have to make the whole decision again. Thanks acura for the crap tires on my 34k car

I'm on my 3rd OEM replacement, last winter I got 3 bubbles on the front tires due to pot holes. I foolishly replaced them with the stock Michilines from Mavis Tire at $216 out the door.
I already have another bubble on the front driver side, that tire is only 4 months old.
I too want to replace ,now with 4 new tires I need a good all season tire. I was thinking about going a little wider, I want to keep the stock rims, any suggestions?
