18" tires: 225/40 vs. 235/40? Opinions please...

I did a search and most people say there's no problems with rubbing for the 225/40-18's with Comptech's, but a few problems with the 235/40's. How's the smoothness and road noise? Would it be much different compared to the tires I have on right now? (235/45-17) I couldn't find any info on the tires effecting the speedometer...I know there's a website, but I couldn't find it. If anyone can link me, that would be great. Please reply if you have any info on 18" wheels/tires (if it helps, I'm looking for 18x7.5" RH Evolution C2's). If you have 18" wheels/tires equipped on your car, please reply. Thanks in advance!

When I had my 18's I was initially running 215/35/18's, they were much too thin and the ride was horrible. I then switched the tires to 225/40/18's the ride improved dramatically
w/out any rubbing associated. Once the 225's were in need of replacing, I switched to 235/40/18's the even improved more over the 225's. I had the 235's on the front wheels, I was going to purchase the rears but I ended up selling the rims. There was no rubbing w/the 235's on my car and I am running eibach sportline suspension which is appreciably lower than your comptech drop. So you should probably be fine with the 235's.

I'm not sure if this is the tire calculator that you needed. But go ahead and try this one.

Who'd you sell the rims to?

Well, as the recipient of two 225s and 2 235s, I must say that the 235s, which are in front, definitely have a more cushiony ride, and I think they look better... alas I cannot fit 235s in my back wheel well (I have a first gen, though, so you shouldnt' worry) so I have to buy 225s... *sigh*

I say go for the 235s.

Go 235/40/18 - try the Sumotomo's (see sig)

They are AWESOME tires, and they are SUPER LOW priced! - BEST BANG for the buck!
They offer "gummy bear" soft rubber w/ a AAA traction rating. They have a 300 tread wear rating (I'm at 21k miles of hard, aggressive driving and I still have about 6-8K left on them) The tread pattern is a cool directional pattern that channels the water to the middle. And, the best part is - you can get them for far less than other brands.

I highly recommend them!!!

I sold them to this girlie, that wouldn't believe that the rims would fit, ahem. She was giving me hella grief, until she decided to take my word that they'd fit. Now she's a happy camper.

I've got my eye on those very Sumo's in 235/45/17. Question is, are they quiet and how is the comfort?

Thanks

Thanks for the info guys!

I still need some more info before making the final decision, such as offset and rim width...18x7.5 is correct, no? and 45+ to 50+mm offset?

...EricL, please respond, since it seems like you have a wide knowledge on Toyo's and wheels

I have Racing Hart Type C 2- 3 piece wheels in 8x18 +50mm offset. On these wheels I have mounted Kumho 235/40/18's. My 01 CL-S is lowered with Comptech springs. I do not have any clearance problems whatsoever.
If I had the chance to do it over again, I thnk I would buy the C2 one piece wheels in 17x7 + 55mm, and use the stock size tires. That would have saved me a lot of money.
I think Acura chose the best wheel and tire size combo for this car(duh).

So with that said, above wheels & tires are FOR SALE $2,400. you pay the shipping (I had to when I bought them 300 miles ago).
I also have 4 Pirelli 225/40/18 P7000 Supersports with 130 miles on them for $450. plus shipping(a $200. savings for someone, a$200. loss for me)

Unfortunately when I researched this topic I came up with the exact opposite. Everyone recommended getting 225/40/18 (I bought 18x8 chromed OZ Antares +48 for my CL-P) ... so I went ahead and bought the Yoko AVS dB (all season ultra-high performance) in the 225's.

However, this thread is making me reconsider. I havent picked up the tires yet due to my accident last week, but I have a deposit on them. I think if I tried real hard they might be able to swap my 225s for 235's ... is the ride quality that much more cushiony in the 235's? is it noticable? I would definately want a better ride quality.

ps - my car isnt lowered at all (yet!)

Hey Rob! ...they are VERY quiet, and the ride is as comfortable (cruising), as the stock tires felt! They seem to soak up the bumps better than most 40 series, however, becuase they are so sticky, they do tend to follow the road grooves.

Thanks again for the info

I still need more input on 225's vs. 235's...so respond away...

Okay, Brack's really got me thinking...maybe I should go with 17"s. It's just that the 45 series make the wheel look really small (I'm sure most of you think that the stock CL-S wheel looks more like 16" rather than 17"). I am really confused now...

But just the thought of 18" RH Evolution C2's with thinner tires...SO FRESH AND SO CLEAN!

If I hadn't purchased my Toyo's, I would definitely get the 18"s without a doubt. Right now, my stock Michelin's have 5k miles on them, and my Toyo's also have 5k. I feel like I am "wasting" money again...not because they're Toyo's, but because of the whole situation. I also plan on getting rims this week, no matter what kind they may be. I'm also planning on to install my springs on at the same time. Everyone, please give me your opinions, suggestions, etc. Thanks in advance again!

Ok, I can only tell you what I know...

The following applies to the SSR Comps 17x8" +48 and Toyo 235/45ZR17-97W*

1. I am not lowered AND NEVER RUB!!!!

2. The Kumhos in 225/45-17 on the SSRs with Comptech lowering springs don't rub (I got this info from what I consider a reliable source).

3. Another member who has the SSRs, Toyos (in 235), and Comptech lowering springs originally said that he NEVER rubbed. About 2 weeks later he said the front tires rub on one or more of the fasteners on the inside of the front wheel well (I never could get more info from him about exactly what was going on).

I also have met with another member who wants to put on the 235/45-17 Toyos. The people at HRE believe that they would work on +52 offset 17x8" rims. However, the rub with the 235, SSR, and Comptech lower springs only occurs under heavy cornering.

This leads me to believe that the 235/45-17s with the lowering springs AND SSRs are right at the edge of fitting OK.

One solution is to go to a 7.5" rim, the other is increase the offset on the 8" rims to +52. Finally, a 235 on a 7.5" rim with +52 offset would be best (so I have been told).

You could call HRE and ask them, just for more input.

Can anyone make a comment from personal experience about the difference in ride quality between the 225 vs 235 series?

I have already tied myself down on the rims .. I have 18x8" with a +48 offset. However, even though I have ordered 225/40/18 tires, I may be able to swap to 235/40/18 if there is a chance for better ride quality.

anybody? thanks!
