Problem replacing a wheel stud
Problem replacing a wheel stud
Yes, I did my research and read DIY's in other forums. I had no problem removing the caliper and rotor, but when I pounded the first Stud out, it came into contact with part of the hub assembly. In all of the DIY's I have read it said the only problem I would run into is the stud hitting the rotor guard. How do I clear the stud from the back of the hub? Do I have to remove the hub? How do I do this?
Pics soon if I need to illustrate the problem. Hopefully anyone who answers will know what I'm talking about though.

I am in the same boat. I need to replace 2 studs but they hit the housing behind the mounting plate. I have read different threads that say you have to remove the hub. Has anyone tried grinding a grove in the housing and part of the stud to allow it to come out and slide a new one in? I don't know how thick the cover/housing over the bearing is and don't want to grind through it. Thanks for any help!
I have found a way to get the wheel studs out without taking the hub apart. All I did was grind a little area in the hub behind the plate, bent the smallest area of the dust plate flat, and ground an edge of the wheel stud and could take the broken stud out. On the new stud, I ground down one spot flat, and was able to align it and with a little tapping, in it went. There was no damage to the threads, though I had a tap in case I needed it! Sorry I was in a hurry and not at my place, so I don't have pics. I hope this helps anyone that needs to change a stud(s) and doesn't want to take the hub apart like all the comments I've seen.
