The '99 is still a 1st generation CL, and before the bad sport-shift transmission. My '97 CL was a great car. If you like the 2nd generation, look for a 6 spd. manual.

Only around 5% of CL owners have had a tranny problem and yes some have had more than one replacement. 5% is insignificant. It just seems like so many have problems here because there are a bunch of members on here that have had a replacement. Remember though, the AT 2nd Gen 3.2CL has a 100K warranty on the tranny. (not sure about 1st Gen) I always say... If you want one, get one. You'll love it as most of us do. Mine has 57K on it with the original tranny. It's fine. I drive it like I stole it and I refuse to baby the tranny because some say "it's made of glass". I say . I bought the car to have fun, and I do. If the tranny breaks, so be it. The stealership will fix it and give me a loaner while I wait.

An '01-'02 AT will be cheaper than an '03 6spd but if you can swing it, go for the 6spd without question. It's just simply more fun.

Good luck!

i got a 99 cl and it runs great @ 124k miles. many of the 1st generation 97-99 cls have no problems.. if they do they are minor.

Ya know, I'm real sceptical about that 5% number. I know three '01 Acura owners with the 5 spd/auto (a TL, a CL-S, and a CL-P). The TL failed the first year. My friend's CL-S failed at 19k. My CL-P failed at 28k.
So let's see... ...strictly from personal experience that's 3 out of 3 or 100% Now you know why I'm sceptical.
