My Tranny Went Out!!!!
At 96,040 miles and 7 years 7 months (nov '01 delivery), my tranny went out today... at least I think that's the problem. THis is what happened:
As I was driving into work on the last mile I was about to pass a car and as I accelerated, I felt the engine slip? or jerk? I accelerated and couldn't get the traction from the car. I kept going and when I went to reverse to park, it happeneded again - no traction. I rolled to park.
Then I decided to drive it to the dealer to have it checked out and as I am 1/4 mile out... the '!' and check engine lights go on.... and I have absolutely no traction. I turn off the car, then turn on and go an extra 2 miles.... happens again.
I called Acura, as I was pretty sure it is the tranny, so they gave the number of their towers, got it towed and now waiting on the diagnosis.
Can anyone tell me if this sounds like a tranny problem? Any advise on how to proceed?

Meh... usually happens like that with me - when it rains it pours. This is all I need to do to the car to bring it back to optimum shape:
- Tranny
- 100k Service
- Timing belt and water pump
- Repair some scratches/rust... Detail it inside and out
- Replace the windshield
- Probably replace the motor mounts
- Soon replace the suspension
- Replace front two tires
Car has 96k miles and its almost 8 yrs old.

The '09 TL is very powerful, semi luxurious inside. I don't like the steel - wood matching inside. I think it could be better. The Sound System would be better if it was BOSE. I have to say the car handles curves GREAT at 80 mph. It's definitely a family car though. Wayyy too big for me, and I am 6'4 but single

Picked up the car today. A new (or rebuilt) tranny definitely feels smoother. Great job by the dealer.
The negative - they sheared a nut in the wheel and said it was done by someone else, they wanted $185 to do it LOL! I couldn't believe it - I can get it done for free or $20 max anywhere else.
They wanted to charge me a diagnosis fee just to check the cruise control fuse... $100, no thanks, i'll do it myself.
They did not reset the radio code - lucky I have mine and didn't have to wait for them to play the "it'll be $160 to 'take your radio out and find your code' game like I did last year"
Sigh* Good and Bad.

sounds like typical dealership crap.
I got my car back from them and the guage cluster was out. They had a tech check it out for me and they couldnt find anything, said it would be 120 to diagnose it. I said f-it and left. went to a nearby parking lot and found out it was a blown fuse! that same fuse box was also checked by the tech and couldnt find anything wrong! needless to say, i came back 30 min later a tore the service writer a new one telling him a kid fixed his problem that his factory trained service tech couldnt.
anyways...lol good to hear you got your car back and the tranny is shifting smoothly. just remember to break it in correctly like a new car.

On my way back there was a car pulled on the side of the road and al the cars stomped on their brakes including me, then I went from 0 to 80 by flooring the gas to pick up with the rest of the traffic on the lane next to me... would that be bad?
Also, I usually drive in the 70 to 90mph range, but with the new tranny I haven't been forcing the RPMs at all, or at least it does not feel like I have....

What if I accidentally drove it to the red line or aggressively once since they replaced the tranny? I have only driven it 200 miles since...

Sorry to poke at this but I'm curious to know technically why we need to 'break in a new car'? Is it bc the pieces have not set in yet? Or something else's critical point is highest earlier in it's life?

All moving components need to have an even ware on them. If you took gears out of one transmission and put them into another, assuming both transmissions are the same and have had some run time, they may not match perfectly. It would be close enough but it could result in some gear noise. Taking it easy allows the gears to properly mesh with each other without "rough" spots.
