Low Beam Headlight Out

Need help troubleshooting drivers side low beam headlight. It was working intermittantly, but now its completely out. I checked the fuse and it is not blown. Now what? I read about a possible bad ballast, but how do I diagnose that as the culprit? Should I take the working headlight and put it in the drivers side or is there an easier way. What are the next steps I should take to figure out if its the headlight or something else?

Yeah, swapping the bulbs is the quickest way to find out if its the bulb or the ballast.

And do your research, I seem to recall there being a grounding issue that can cause this ... you'll want to look into that before buying a new ballast.

When mine was flickering and not staying on I bought new bulbs and that solved the problem for about 2 days.. 90% it is the ballast, search some junk yards u can find one for $100-$150, DLR is gonna want $300+ for just the part and $600 for part and install!

Yeah new ballasts are not cheap. I thought mine was going but i got lucky and it was just the bulbs. There is a great DIY to replace the ballasts and you can get kits cheap. There is a group buy in the BM for $60 for a full kit. Little modding to the housings and you've got all new lights!

No problem man. Let us know if you have any questions. I've got a DIY for clearing the headlights that will show you how to get the housing off the car so you can work on the ballasts with the DIY link i gave ya.

Hey Dave586270,
Getting ready to check my low beam with a new one since it goes on then off. May be short but to check, I tried to use a T20 bit. It did not word because it appears I need a bit with a hole in the middle. Is this true? Where do I get this? Dealer?
Thanks Jeff aka Acurabat

A flat head can work, thats what I did the first time I took off my bulb covers, haha. But what you need is a torque bit. Plus the flat-head method can strip that torque screw if you do it a few times then your screwed. Just go to any tool shop, i went to the True Value down the street and picked up a torque set with like 20 bits for $5. Then you can do it right from there on. GL, if you have any other questions feel free.

Theres a dimple in the middle of the screw though. Ive not seen any Torq bits with the dimple. I just took the dremel and put a slot into the screw head. Now I can use a flat head.

So what about the "danger" warning stating something like "danger 25,000 volts can kill you", it there that much voltage there to be aware of?

Yea, make sure the lights are off when unplug them.

Disconnect the ballast too for extra safety.

I have the same situation, but the light just went out and there is no flickering. The fuse was blown, replaced , blew out again, so mine is def a ballast issue?

low beam right side out.

Guy came in with right side low beam out. He had replace the bulb and that didn't help. I checked power at the bulb and has not power going to it. From reading post it sounds like balist. No bolwn fuses and good relays. Also I see that its said to replace the system with a new kit as its better and cheaper to do so. Any help with this would be great. Thanks.
