Engine Overheated, over-revved. Is it okay??
Hi, I have a 2002 Acura CL, 80k miles. My friend who doesn't understand about shifting drove the car and took it on the highway in 2nd gear in manual shift mode! It stayed at 7-8000 RPM for several minutes and when he finally pulled over the engine smelled burnt!! I changed the oil today, and the tranny fluid soon, although they looked fine. Engine seems to run fine today. Am I to expect more trouble soon?? Thanks for your help!

If it was just that short of a time you should be ok.

the only way to over rev the engine on an electronically controlled automatic is for the automatic transmission to fail and drop into 2nd gear at speeds greater than 80mph J32a would not survive at 8K for more than a few seconds due to valve float

yea man, cars rpm gauges are not all that accurate and can do some fishy business.
Obviously something went haywire for the tach to display 8000rpms that long. but it's a computer, sometimes you get a temporary problem and it's gone forever after one time. (AMEN)
I say pretend it never happened, since you're car seems to be doing just fine.
Buddy must of had a LEAD foot. tell him to lighten the load next time (which you will probably won't give him again)
The car gave you a hint bro, don't let your buddies beat your whip up, it wanted the GAS from you
I've always found shyt goes wrong when you change things up (for the most part), way I see it, it's the car telling you wtf it thinks. LOL so listen

Are you sure this happened, or was this just what he told you? I think if you were in the car when it happened, you would have just shifted it into 4th or 5th to save your engine. Actually, anyone who has ever driven a car would not let it drive at 7500 rpm for a few minutes without doing something about it. With a 2002 CL, I would be much more concerned about the damage done the transmission rather than any potential damage done to the engine if you smelled things burning.
Or is this like the "I have a friend who has a problem. Whenever I-I mean, my friend, goes to pee, it really burns and there's some blood that comes out."
