Engine Miss Very Aggravating
Engine Miss Very Aggravating
02 CL 123,000 miles. Ck engine light came on noticeable miss esp while accelerating or under load. Had code that EGR was bad - replaced EGR cleared codes still have miss.
Codes then read engine miss on cyl 1,2,3,4,5 so tried new coil pack still have miss now codes read enigne miss on cyl 2,3,4,5 and one other code P1399 Manufacturere control mss fire.
Any help would be appreciated.

Well the saga continues.
Replaced plugs with NGK irridiums. Still have miss. Kicks code P1399. Random miss fire.
Wondering about the gas now.....gonna drain it and see what happens.
Maybe its injector time.

Well here's the bad news - front middle cylinder has no compression. Looks like I got some bad gas because the trouble happened about 10 miles after I filled up.
The gas probably caused the injector to stick open searing the cyl and now no compression. Poured a little oil in the cyl to see if I could any compression - no luck.
Good news is engines for this car are cheap since they don't fail that often. Was gonna change timing belt and install new water pump, but a new engine with no miles is less than getting the work done!
Go figure...... something good out of something bad!

I'll post where after I get my engine. How about $500 for an engine with less than a 100 miles on it?
The reason the TL CL engines are cheap is because they don't typically fail. When a salvage yard gets one it sits on the shelf. There are lots of wrecked TLs and CLs out there that have had the engine pulled only to find very few buyers.
My CL has 123,000 miles on it, I was about to replace timing belt, water pump, crank sensor and belts - but with engines this cheap its best to repalce the darn thing with a low mile one. And I will get new injectors, coils etc etc..... with a 3 month warranty.

Damn I hope this is not the issue with my GF's car. I thought she may have gotten bad gas because she noticed the first CEL right after filling up with premium at a gas station in a verry small town.
Did you notice worse performance or gas mileage? We haven't noticed anything really dramatic. Did you look at the cylinder with a scope? So the injector stuck open and basically ruined the piston rings in that cylinder I'm assuming? Crazy stuff. I thought that the rat that chewed her knock sensor wire was obscure....

Took a look at the bad cylinder. The exhaust valve was toast! Kinda hard to believe that it would get burnt as bad as it did. The amount of carbon build up was remarkable on all cylinders.
The original owner burned nothing but 87 octane. Not sure if that can cause the problem.
If I had run some Seafoam through it when I got it everything would have been fine.
Some advice on buying a used car - run a can of Seafoam through it!
