Driver Side Radiator Fan - Stays On!

Hello,

On my 01 CLS usually when I am driving around in town - stop and goes etc for some time when i turn my car off the driver side radiator fan stays on. Usually for 10 to 15 minutes. If I am on the freeway, get off and turn the car off it does not do this. I assume it is because there is more airflow? Not sure....

In doing some research on this it sounds like my "fan temp sensor A" needs to be replaced.

Can someone please confirm this? Please provide a link to where I can buy one. I want to make sure I buy the right thing.

Also a description of how to replace it would be awesome! I am not too car savvy, but with the help of you guys I think I can do it

Thank you!!!

When was the last time you changed the coolant out? Might be a good idea then purge the radiator of all air bubbles and see if that will fix it. It's a cheap and easy step.

Thank you for replying.

I did a coolant flush about a year ago.

Today, I filled the reservoir up as it was almost empty. Tomorrow morning I will see if it will take any directly in the radiator. Then I will report back.

rad fan staying on could be a switch staying closed. or if the engine is actually getting too hot it could be the thermostat not opening and closing like it should. i just went through a shit load of rad troubleshooting and i read the manual too many times to count.

so first.. does it happen only once the car is heated up? or can you turn car on and then off a min later and rad fan is on when engine is cold. if the engine is cold it may be the rad fan module. now if it the engine is hot and it stays on. a way to tell if your thermostat is stuck completely closed is by simply holding the rad hose and comparing the temp. the top one will get super hot.... the bottom one will be warmish, not burning not. if this is the case after the car has been warmed up and driven. the thermostat is stuck closed and this will cause that issue. low rad fluid will also bugger up that as well so that could also be the issue. start with rad fluid.

good luck bud

I think the problem *might* be fixed. If so, the solution was to add coolant as it was low.

This only happened when the car was hot and then you let it sit idle, or were driving at low speeds >20 and then turning the car off.

I got home today and left the car running for 5 minutes and the fan did not kick on....I am still not convinced though and will be doing little stress tests on it throughout the week. If it does not kick then I think the problem is solved.

Thank you for the help guys.

If the reservoir was empty, the radiator is probably low too. You should add to both and keep an eye on the reservoir.
