CLS starts, then no start, then starts?

I have a 01 CLS.
Last week, it wouldn't start up in the morning for my wife to go to work .
Turned over fine, but no start. I got home, and it started right up. The next day, I checked it. and same no start problem again. Turns over normal speed, and the fuel pump pressurizes and fuel level comes up on the gauge.( 1/2 tank)
This morning it starts right up again! ???
Don't want wife to drive it and get stranded!
Replaced timing belt a few months ago, so doubt its jumping teeth or any timing issues. It's got 180K on it, but still runs strong.
Any ideas ?
BTW, it has a nearly new battery
Any help would be much appreciated! JoeC

it might be the fuel relay, when it doesn't start is the weather hot?

Hi, thanks for the reply. This just started happening Friday morning, and it was cold and rainy. Over the last 2 days I was able to start it 3 or 4 times, but it also wouldn't start several times as well, when I tried it. The fuel gauge goes up when I turn the key to on, which evidently means there is fuel pressure, which seems to mean the fuel pump is working..... at least that is what I read when researching this. Also, the little key symbol on the gauge pod blinks five times when I shut it off. I read that this is an indication that the chip in the ignition key is good.

My daughter had a domestic car (Pontiac Bonneville) that had this type of problem periodically. It ended up being a faulty crank sensor.

if you turn the key to the last position before starting can you hear the fuel pump priming? If it's quiet outside you should be able to hear it.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. It was the relay to the fuel pump. The solder cracked so I refinished all the connections and that fixed it.

1. Fuel pump relay
2. Crank sensor
3. Faulty ignition switch

One of the above
