Car goes crazy on firm acceleration from stop

My car tried to kill me when transmission took a dump while driving on the highway, phew, now that's fixed I have another problem (this one existed before tranny failure):

When accelerating from stop or slow speed (0 - 5 mph), if I floor the gas hard, the front wheels react by failing to grab the road incorrectly. We are not talking gentle tire traction slippage (which is what normally should happen), rather it feels like the car is slamming the tire into the ground over and over again. VSA triangle engages. The action is quite violent. Like, other drivers in adjacent lanes look over to see what's wrong.

  • If I disable VSA slamming/stuttering still occurs but I have to accelerate harder for it to occur.

  • The car will not stop this behavior until the gas is let off and I accelerate more gently.

  • On dry roads, I can accelerate moderately hard without this tire slamming.

  • Why this is a real danger is that it happens very easily on wet roads. It could place me in on-coming traffic and not let up until I release the accelerator.....dangerous.

  • No problems driving at speed (>15 mph) at any acceleration.

  • In my case, slamming seems to originate from front right wheel.

Anybody seen anything like this or know what is broken?
Thanks guys.

some how the power is not being delivered to the ground.
broken mounts can do this.

you can look at your mounts to see their current condition

Ah, I'll check it out.

You alluded that some other things commonly cause wheel hop, could it be something mechanical with the axle/wheel/joint?

Had a tire blowout on right front once, car literally jumped, ran over metal scrap at night that blew up tire. Replaced tire long time ago, steering runs straight and fine....except for this darn wheel hop.

it's stock suspension, 100k mi, this has been happening for a while tho.

the wheel hop usually isn't a problem except on wet surfaces...car used to slip and then smoothly regain traction in a predictable fashion but now it just wheel hops real bad.

it isn't getting worse, but thought I'd fix it since I had a close encounter after some rain when I was trying to gun it across on-coming traffic.

suspension should help, i, myself, don't know of any way to completely prevent it, but new suspension should keep it to a minimum.

i also have this issue currently but i have plans for suspension this winter so ill just deal for now.

Tires, suspension, mounts will all aid in reducing wheel hop. Theres nothing wrong with the car, its FWD. Wheel hop and FWD go hand in hand.

Very normal. Slow down on wet roads is the solution.

You can limit it by replacing mounts, tires, & lowering the suspension, but it will still be there. I have all that & can induce wheel hop easily off the line.

And dont keep doing it either, otherwise it can lead to increased wear on the suspension.

Be smart, let off the gas and get better tires. Also get NRG torque/engine dampeners for the front and rear. Helps alot with wheel hop.
