SRS light on

Just took the car in for 48000km major scheduled maintenance today.
Dealer had SRS light turned off for me and mentioned that if it ever comes back on, they might have to replace OBD unit (Airbag occupancy sensor or something) and it'd cost quite a lot.
Well, I was on my way back home from the dealership and guess what? This SRS light came back on ;-(

What does it actually do and even if the actual part is faulty, airbags should deploy when they're supposed to? (in the accident)
Since no baby ever rides in my car, I don't really think that passenger occupancy sensor is needed anyways.
Should I just leave it the way it is instead of paying $$$ to replace it?

Anyone had this problem before? Please share..

Thanks!

Gino

Perhaps you'll have better luck if you post in Car Talk instead of the 2nd Gen Gallery?

Airbag light on = something is wrong with the system. Could be anything related to the SRS stuff. Dealer gets a code that narrows the problem down. If they say it's the OBD then there's a chance the car will think it's occupied by someone of a different weight and fire at a different speed - either too little to help you or too much to injure you or not at all.

I had the same issue twice. The first tme my dealership replaced the control unit and the second time - sensor on the passenger side. It is covered by warranty but not after 48000 miles I guess... Which is approaching fast

According to the service guys airbags will not deploy when SRS lamp is on. The control unit costs about $400.

We, Canadians up here, only have 3 year/60,000km bumper to bumper warranty. Pity..
Mine's 2001 and it's not covered under warranty anymore although it only has 49,000km on it. ;-(

My guess was..I could just turn the light off manually by doing what other guys have stated before..maybe I'll just go for that instead of spending $400 on the control unit..damn thing..

Hopefully, the airbags will deploy.

SRS components are warrantied at 5yrs/100km because it is a safety component.
If the failed part is the opds control unit or the opds sensor the parts will need to be replaced and the system reinitialized to perform properly.

Are the SRS components really covered up to 5yrs/100,000km?
I've recently had car serviced at the dealership but they I was only told that either opds control unit or the sensor might need to be replaced if the light comes back on and it'll likely cost me around $400 to for a replacement.
My 01 CLS only has 50,000km on it.
Did you get that SRS warranty information from the Acura dealer and is it for real?
Let me know, thanks!

if the light is on, airbag won't deploy.

any chance you have any electronics running near the passenger seat? dvd player, laptop, cell phone charger, etc?

magnetic fields will switch the sensor also...

Nope, I don't have any electronics running in my car.
It just came on and well, after I had the Acura technician turn it off, the light came back on the same day.

I just had this service done

My SRS light came on about two weeks ago, I tried resetting the SRS light according to the reset instructions. I was never able to reset it so I finally took it in to have it checked out. They tested all the components, which led them to the SRS computer. Overall it ended up costing me about $310 (parts and labor)

Larry

Forgot to mention, car is at 56,000 miles
